Chapter 030: This World Is So Thrilling
[Please purchase one box of incense, one box of joss paper, one box of candles, one bucket of chicken blood, and one box of blank yellow talisman paper within two hours, and deliver them to 999 Ginkgo Alley, outside Guifeng City. Recipient: Wu Yu.]
Wu Yu!?
Ying Shu stood up abruptly upon seeing the recipient's name.
Was it the same Wu Yu she knew?
According to the two previous transmigrators, they had only crossed into other worlds after death. Could the deceased Wu Yu have also transmigrated to another world?
Regardless, she had to go and see for herself.
Ying Shu checked the list of requested items; she had everything except the chicken blood and the blank yellow talisman paper.
It was so late now, where could she find those?
Wait.
Hadn't she drawn chicken blood just yesterday? And there were all sorts of items for the dead stored away as well.
Now that she had the blood, what about the blank yellow talisman paper...
Ying Shu couldn't help but look at Ying Li, who was currently playing with Xixi.
She tentatively asked, "Grandpa, I ran into that man named Old Lei again. He said our family used to perform soul-summoning rituals. Is that true?"
Ying Xing and Ying Yu exchanged a glance.
Ying Li turned his head to look at her, then turned back to continue playing with Xixi as he said, "When has our family ever performed soul-summoning rituals? Don't listen to that nonsense."
"Then why would he say that?"
"Our family is in the funeral business. We often help people with rites and chanting at funerals. Maybe that's why people get the wrong idea."
That didn't sound wrong.
Unfortunately, Ying Li had his back to her, so she couldn't tell if he was being truthful, but she always felt that her grandfather was hiding something from her.
She asked again, "Grandpa, do you know where to buy blank yellow talisman paper?"
"I don't draw talismans, how would I know where to buy that? Why are you asking?" Ying Li looked back at her again. "Are you planning to draw talismans?"
"It's not for me. Someone wants blank yellow talisman paper and asked me to deliver it."
Ying Li frowned. "Now?"
Afraid he would stop her from going out, she lied, "Tomorrow morning."
Ying Li didn't say anything more.
By eight-thirty, being accustomed to early nights, he began to get sleepy.
"I'm going to wash up and sleep. You all should get some rest too."
Ying Shu had anticipated that he wouldn't be able to stay up, which was why she hadn't been in a rush to leave earlier.
Once he entered his bedroom, she quickly instructed Ying Xing and the others to look after Xixi, then headed to the shop to gather the items for delivery.
"Sister."
Ying Xing had slipped down after her.
Ying Shu, who was busy storing the items into her spatial storage, was startled and snapped, "What is it?"
"Come with me."
Ying Xing led her to a corner of the warehouse and pulled a large box out from the very bottom. "There's blank yellow talisman paper here."
Ying Shu opened the box. It was packed full of yellow talisman paper. It must have been sealed away for a long time, as it was covered in a layer of dust.
"How did you know we had this?"
Her brother had never been involved in the shop's affairs, yet he knew the warehouse inventory better than she did.
"Isn't your delivery time almost up? You'd better get going."
Ying Xing scampered back upstairs.
Ying Shu narrowed her eyes. There was definitely something wrong with this kid.
With the delivery deadline approaching, she didn't have time to overthink it. She stored everything in her space and immediately set off on her electric scooter.
Today was the fourteenth of the seventh lunar month, and given the unusual nature of the delivery, she suspected she might be headed to another extraordinary world. She packed twice as much as requested.
After leaving Xiyue Street, she noticed there were more people on the streets than usual, and they were acting with strange abandon. Some were sitting on the roofs of cars, others stood atop trees or streetlights, and some were even climbing on the outside of people's windows. Yet, no one else seemed to notice; people were just chatting and strolling as usual.
Looking closer, she realized these "people" were deathly pale, with gloomy, sinister smiles. Some were translucent, others solid; some looked indistinguishable from normal humans, while others were more terrifying than ghosts in horror movies. They would run around trying to scare people, but the victims couldn't see them—otherwise, they would be scared to death.
Ying Shu finally realized she was seeing ghosts.
This was her first time truly seeing ghosts. She took a deep breath and sped up.
When she reached the entrance of Ginkgo Alley and looked into the pitch-black lane, her heart wavered. But thinking of Wu Yu potentially suffering in another world, she drove in.
The alley was dark but devoid of ghosts.
About five minutes later, the narrow, dark path opened up.
Clear, bright moonlight illuminated the earth.
Though Ying Shu couldn't identify her location, she saw a large, dark mass of people moving slowly forward.
They seemed to be playing some kind of game. Some were hopping forward, others seemed to have twisted ankles, limping along with great difficulty.
Ying Shu muttered, "So many people, which one is Wu Yu?"
She sent a message, but there was no reply.
After a moment of thought, she shouted to the crowd ahead, "Who is Wu Yu? Your delivery order has arrived."
The people in front stopped instantly and slowly turned around.
Ying Shu had a bad premonition. As they turned, she saw that those in front had glowing green eyes, while the others had dead, fish-like eyes rolled back in their heads.
In the beam of her headlights, she saw that the ones with green eyes were raising their hands like the hopping corpses in movies, while those with rolled-back eyes looked like zombies, with gray, decaying, and mangled bodies. They all shared one thing: they were baring their mouths in vicious, bloody grins.
Her eyes widened. "Holy crap!!!"
Ying Shu didn't hesitate to turn her scooter around, screaming in terror, "Zombies and ghouls!"
What kind of world had she traveled to? How could both vampires and zombies exist in the same place? Was there even a human left in this world?
Good heavens, this world was intense.
Wait, what about Wu Yu?
She didn't turn into a zombie or a ghoul, did she?
Ying Shu glanced back. They weren't moving fast, and she quickly left them behind. However, she couldn't guarantee there weren't higher-level entities among them.
She pushed her scooter to its top speed. The ground was uneven, and the bumping nearly threw her off.
The guards of Guifeng City watched as the zombies and ghouls moved away one after another, looking at each other in confusion.
"Why are the zombies and ghouls leaving?"
Someone looked through a telescope. "There's a girl on an electric scooter heading toward the City of Rebirth. The zombies and ghouls are following her."
"It's a corpse tide tonight. Why is someone outside the city? Is she a ghost from the City of Rebirth?"
"If she were a ghost, the zombies wouldn't be interested in her."
The person with the telescope said excitedly, "The Corpse King is chasing her! We're safe."
The people of Guifeng City: "!!!"
