Chapter 20: A Housewife Who Only Knows How to Wash and Scrub
Seeing who had arrived, Shen Jiaxiao’s smiling face darkened. "Shen Yifeng, have you lost your mind?!"
Shen Yifeng frowned, looking at Shen Jiaxiao with a warning gaze. "Ms. Su came here with sincerity. Is it polite of you to keep the door shut against her?"
His eyes landed on Wen Ying, and for a moment, he was taken aback.
Wen Ying was tall, with slender, delicate shoulders and a neck that spoke of a refined upbringing and excellent posture. Her black curly hair was tucked behind her ears, highlighting her strikingly cool-toned, fair skin. Even the light makeup she wore could not diminish the intensity of her features; her eyes, slightly upturned at the corners, held a look of profound indifference and detachment.
She was beautiful to the point of being impossible to ignore.
"Is she the honored guest you’re talking about?" Shen Yifeng asked, his surprise turning into a mocking laugh. "She’s just a housewife who does nothing but chores. Is she worth snubbing Ms. Su over?"
Shen Yifeng knew Wen Ying, of course. After all, she was his sister Shen Jiaxiao’s best friend. He knew Wen Ying was married, though he wasn’t sure to whom. In the past, having been struck by her appearance, he had looked into her background slightly, only to conclude she was a mere vase—pleasant to look at but utterly useless.
She was nothing like Su Nian. A woman as exceptional as Su Nian was a rare find.
"Did a donkey kick you in the head? Since when do you get a say in Feixi’s business?" Shen Jiaxiao held nothing but contempt for her brother; he was a complete moron! Just the day before yesterday, she had learned that Shen Yifeng had a crush on Su Nian. When rumors surfaced about Su Nian and Lu Jinchuan, this idiot had gone out and drank himself into alcohol poisoning.
Shen Yifeng glanced at Wen Ying again before saying with an unreadable expression, "I just can’t stand you people putting on airs. Ms. Su has always held U.N2 in high regard, which is why she wanted to meet with President He. Isn't it a good thing for talented people to exchange ideas? To waste your time on a housewife—is your vision really that narrow?"
"Who does she think she is? Who cares if she 'regards' us?" Shen Jiaxiao laughed in anger. "Tell her to get lost, and you get lost too. Do you know you're polluting the environment, you moron?"
"Shen Jiaxiao!"
Shen Yifeng had no choice but to turn to He Xicheng. He couldn't bear the thought of Su Nian still waiting downstairs. "President He, why don't you go down and have a chat?"
He Xicheng toyed with his fountain pen. "I’m curious about one thing: whose face carries more weight, yours or Su Nian's?"
Shen Yifeng understood He Xicheng’s implication immediately. He was saying that neither of them had any self-awareness! Indignant and dissatisfied, he shot a glare at Wen Ying and turned to leave.
Wen Ying didn't take it to heart, though she felt a vague sense that the matter with Su Nian was far from over. Although Shen Yifeng had softened the remarks made by He Xicheng and Shen Jiaxiao, Su Nian still grasped Feixi’s stance.
She pursed her lips. When had she ever offended Feixi? Since returning to the country, she had met with many top-tier figures, all of whom had nothing but praise for her. Was Feixi just trying to be difficult?
Regardless, she contacted Lu Jinchuan and briefly described the situation.
Lu Jinchuan remained calm and composed. "It's fine. I'll handle it."
Wen Ying spent the morning learning about Feixi, and a preliminary direction began to take shape in her mind.
The feeling of striving within a field she truly loved made her feel incredibly fulfilled. She wasn't doing this for anyone else, but for herself—to finally live a life of her own. She didn't even spare a thought for the messy entanglements involving Lu Jinchuan and Zhou Yu.
At noon, at Lansheng.
Lu Jinchuan closed his file, rubbed his temples, and glanced at his watch. It was nearly one o'clock. His stomach felt empty, and he habitually reached toward his left side.
He reached for nothing.
He raised his dark eyes and looked. In that spot, day after day, two exquisite thermal lunch boxes had been placed with perfect punctuality. There would always be a thoughtful sticky note attached, written in elegant, delicate script, reminding him not to forget to eat.
"Zhao Ke," he called out.
Zhao Ke entered. "President Lu, what are your orders?"
Lu Jinchuan looked at the space on his left, lost in thought. "Did you throw away today’s lunch box?"
