Chapter 16: How Can You Spy on Someone’s Privacy?
Lu Jinchuan had indeed changed rooms. So early in the morning, he was coming and going with Su Nian—last night, they must have spent the entire night together in the same room.
Wen Ying suddenly felt a wave of nausea.
She avoided the two of them and retreated back to her room, rushing to the bathroom in an attempt to vomit something up.
In the end, nothing came out.
Her appetite had been poor lately; perhaps her condition was worse than she had imagined.
Looking at her haggard reflection in the mirror, a chill crept into her heart.
People were so fragile.
She could only be thankful that she had woken up before reaching a point of no return.
There was still time for her to become herself again.
Wen Ying resolutely reapplied her makeup to look more spirited.
She asked the guesthouse to arrange a car to take her down the mountain, then received a call from her grandmother.
Her grandmother was a stern, no-nonsense old woman. Since her grandfather passed away early, her grandmother had devoted all her energy to raising her children.
After her mother’s death, her grandmother had grown even more silent, but she was especially concerned about Wen Ying’s well-being.
“Grandma?” Wen Ying cleared her throat before answering, careful not to reveal any suspicion.
“Have you eaten breakfast?” Qu Suilan asked with genuine concern.
Wen Ying felt warmth surge in her chest. “Just eating now. Grandma, do you miss me?”
Qu Suilan chuckled softly. “It’s nothing urgent. I’ve just knitted two scarves for you and Jinchuan lately. The weather’s getting colder, and handmade scarves keep you warm. When will you have time to come collect them? You might as well come home for a meal, Grandma will make you some plum pork ribs.”
Wen Ying lowered her gaze. “Grandma, you don’t have to trouble yourself so much.”
“It’s different this time. Grandma knows that life won’t be easy marrying into a family like his. There’s so little I can do to help you, so I want to do my bit. Be kind to Jinchuan. If he has a conscience, he’ll treat my Yingying well too, right?”
Tears welled in Wen Ying’s eyes, and she gently wiped the corner of her eye with her fingertip. “He’s been quite busy recently. Maybe—”
“There’s always time for a meal. Try to find some time in the next few days.”
The old lady hadn’t seen Wen Ying and Lu Jinchuan for a long time and was understandably worried.
Wen Ying thought for a moment and agreed. “Okay, I’ll try.”
She considered that the matter of her divorce from Lu Jinchuan should be discussed with her grandmother by Lu Jinchuan himself, to ensure an amicable parting.
In the eyes of the elderly, even the gravest matters needed explanation.
She didn’t want her grandmother to find out that Lu Jinchuan had been unfaithful and risk upsetting her health. It would be better to give a gentler reason for the divorce—that they were simply incompatible.
This was something Lu Jinchuan would need to handle with her grandmother.
After a moment’s hesitation, Wen Ying got up and stepped out.
Approaching Lu Jinchuan’s door, she noticed it was ajar.
Wen Ying walked over, intending to knock.
Through the crack in the door, she saw Su Nian tiptoe to wrap her arms around Lu Jinchuan’s neck. He loosely held her waist, tilting his head as though about to kiss her.
Wen Ying’s eyes flickered.
She froze instantly.
Suddenly, a pair of hands pushed her away forcefully. Wen Ying felt dizzy and nearly lost her footing.
“Don’t you have any shame? How dare you spy on others’ privacy?!”
Lu Siran appeared out of nowhere, her beautiful face contorted with anger as she glared at Wen Ying, as if she were a heinous criminal.
The commotion disturbed those inside.
Lu Jinchuan and Su Nian quickly opened the door and stepped out.
Su Nian rarely furrowed her brows, but now she pressed her lips tightly, casting a glance at Wen Ying.
“Do you like what you see?” Lu Jinchuan’s handsome face bore a faint, unsettling smile, his cold eyes oppressive enough to steal one’s breath.
He was angry.
Though he said nothing, Wen Ying could feel the weight of his reproach.
