Chapter Five: The Growing Distance of Unspoken Understanding
As the final exams approached, the atmosphere at school grew increasingly tense. In every class and every classroom, the air was thick with the spirit of review. Lin Ke’er had entered exam-preparation mode early on; aside from attending classes, she constantly moved between the library and classrooms. The days seemed to fly by swiftly. She busied herself in her own world, and though fatigue occasionally crept in, she had grown accustomed to this rhythm—simple, quiet, yet brimming with challenges.
Whenever she lowered her gaze to her books, a swirl of complex emotions would quietly rise within her. She had long been used to studying alone, but this solitude felt different whenever she interacted with Shen Haoran.
Shen Haoran remained as lively as ever. During breaks in studying, he would sometimes approach Lin Ke’er to tease her lightly or occasionally ask a question. Each time they sat facing each other, a warm sensation would swell in her heart. Though their words were few, they always sensed each other’s presence in the quiet of their shared study.
One day, the school organized a mock exam. Everyone prepared nervously, and the atmosphere grew somewhat oppressive. Lin Ke’er arrived at the exam hall early, taking her usual seat by the window and reviewing her notes one last time. Though she knew she had put in considerable effort preparing, the nervousness inside her would not dissipate.
Shortly after, Shen Haoran entered the exam hall and took a seat in the front row, just like her. Lin Ke’er glanced at him and suddenly noticed he seemed much more composed than usual, no longer the boy who laughed loudly and joked around in class. His head bowed over his book, brows slightly furrowed, he appeared more mature than before.
When the bell rang, signaling the start of the exam, everyone began to answer the questions. Lin Ke’er adjusted her mindset, took a deep breath, and concentrated fully on the paper. Throughout the exam, she barely noticed any distractions; all her attention was fixed on the test.
As the exam ended, everyone packed up their papers and left the classroom. Lin Ke’er felt a great weight lift off her shoulders, finally able to breathe freely. She tidied her bag and was about to leave when Shen Haoran approached her.
“The exam’s over. How do you think you did?” Shen Haoran asked with a smile, a hint of ease shining in his eyes.
Lin Ke’er pressed her lips together and nodded with a smile. “Not bad, just whatever I can get.” She smiled shyly, though inside she wasn’t entirely satisfied with her performance.
“You don’t need to worry,” Shen Haoran said casually. “I’ve seen how capable you are.”
Lin Ke’er was momentarily stunned. She looked up at Shen Haoran, warmth blossoming in her heart. She had always been modest, keeping a low profile among the crowd and never boasting, but his words brought her a quiet comfort, quietly awakening a hidden feeling within her.
“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice tinged with gratitude.
“Hey, are you starting to believe in yourself a little?” Shen Haoran teased, winking playfully.
Lin Ke’er smiled faintly and shook her head gently. “Not yet.”
Shen Haoran grinned and patted her shoulder. “You’re always so humble.” He paused, then looked at her with unexpected seriousness. “But having that kind of attitude is truly rare.”
Lin Ke’er was taken aback, her heart stirred. She didn’t quite understand why he said that—perhaps it was just a passing remark, or perhaps he saw something in her she had never noticed.
In that moment, the surrounding noise seemed to fade away, and her thoughts grew restless. She began to realize her feelings for Shen Haoran had quietly changed. Those small interactions, those occasional moments of care and warmth, seemed to have taken root and blossomed deep within her heart.
As the final exams drew nearer, Lin Ke’er found their interactions growing increasingly natural. They were no longer merely classmates; an unspoken understanding had formed between them. She no longer felt so reserved in his presence, and he was no longer distant. Silently, they leaned on each other, their hearts subtly shifting.
One afternoon after school, Lin Ke’er packed her bag to head home. Just as she stepped out of the building, she saw Shen Haoran standing by the school gate, waiting for her. Surprised, she soon smiled softly. “Why, aren’t you walking with your friends today?”
Shen Haoran shrugged and smiled mischievously. “I’m a bit tired today and wanted to walk alone. But since you’re not in a hurry, let’s walk together.”
Lin Ke’er paused, her heart quickening slightly, but she nodded. “Alright.”
Side by side, they walked out of the school gate. The season was shifting from autumn to winter; the breeze carried a crisp chill. Outside the campus on the street, streetlights flickered on one by one, casting a warm golden glow over them, illuminating their silhouettes walking in tandem. Words were few, yet every step felt natural, as if everything was unfolding effortlessly.
“How have you been lately? Is the final exam review intense?” Shen Haoran suddenly asked, his tone laced with genuine concern.
“Not too bad, just pretty stressful,” Lin Ke’er replied with a gentle smile. “How about you? Are you ready for the challenge?”
Shen Haoran smiled even brighter. “Yeah, I think I’m okay. Probably won’t be too hard.” He glanced at Lin Ke’er, as if wanting to say something but held back.
Lin Ke’er noticed the complexity in his gaze and furrowed her brows slightly. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he said softly, his voice growing a bit somber. “It’s just that time passes so quickly. Before we know it, this will all be over, and everyone will be chasing their own futures.”
A jolt struck Lin Ke’er’s heart, stirring emotions beneath her calm exterior. Yes, time truly flew. The moments she spent with Shen Haoran seemed never to have stopped, yet each day slipped quietly away. She knew that their youth would one day come to an end, and that moment now felt ever closer.
The two walked in the cold wind, the world around them blurring, leaving only that subtle feeling rising gently in the air. Shen Haoran’s eyes met Lin Ke’er’s, weaving a picture of two hearts moving apart, yet somehow, in an unspoken instant, drawing ever closer.
Lin Ke’er’s heart quickened. Though she said nothing, she understood—this feeling had quietly taken root, and she was no longer the one who could only watch silently from afar.
