Chapter 24: Tacit Understanding and Stirrings of the Heart
As the college entrance examination approached, Lin Ke’er’s life became increasingly tense and busy. Her daily study schedule was packed, and every minute in class slipped away with alarming speed. She knew she was drawing closer to the goal she had always pursued, yet a voice constantly echoed in her heart: "What will the future look like?" She dared not guess or venture to imagine it, but the voice within never ceased.
Every morning, she would wake up in the dawn light, hurriedly put on her uniform, and rush to the classroom, moving steadily toward her dreams. She knew that every day in front of her was a preparation for that ultimate day. Day after day, she remained calm and focused.
However, as time passed, everything on campus seemed to undergo subtle changes. Shen Haoran’s figure still shone brightly on the basketball court, but the distance between them seemed to be widening quietly. She was no longer by his side as often as she used to be, and their interactions had dwindled. Whenever she inadvertently caught his gaze, she would always capture a hint of unusual gentleness and complexity, though she could not find the words to describe that fluttering emotion.
"Ke’er, are you ready for this afternoon’s mock exam?" Xiao Mei asked with a smile as she approached Lin Ke’er’s desk during the break.
"Yes, almost," Lin Ke’er replied, tidying up her books and looking up with a gentle smile. "Even though every mock exam makes me nervous, I will do my best."
"That’s good, don’t be too anxious," Xiao Mei said, patting her shoulder. "I believe you can do it."
Lin Ke’er nodded slightly, though her heart remained restless. Despite trying not to overthink, whenever she sat down to study, her thoughts would uncontrollably drift toward Shen Haoran. Even as she strove to focus on her books, that lingering attachment refused to fade.
The atmosphere during the afternoon mock exam was intensely stressful. Every student in the room was buried in their work, the sound of pen tips scratching against paper filling the air. Lin Ke’er’s heart rate accelerated; the pressure of the exam felt like a heavy burden, making it hard to breathe. Each question stood before her like a massive boulder, waiting to be conquered.
As the hourglass of time drained away, Lin Ke’er felt all her senses converging on the test paper. She scrutinized every question and every answer with extreme caution, fearing that a single minor mistake might affect her score. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down and seal off all emotions and external distractions.
When the final bell rang, Lin Ke’er let out a sigh of relief, feeling as though she had been released from the tension. She set down her pen, stood up, and walked out of the exam hall, finding her classmates chatting and discussing the questions with ease. Lin Ke’er offered a forced smile, though she felt a sense of fatigue. The exam had not been easy, but she knew she had to keep striving.
The evening sun remained warm, and the campus seemed exceptionally tranquil. Lin Ke’er walked back to the dormitory alone, her thoughts drifting far away. The sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting a glow on her face, and as a light breeze brushed through her hair, she couldn't help but close her eyes, savoring the peace of the moment.
Suddenly, a familiar burst of laughter from afar shattered her serenity. She opened her eyes to see Shen Haoran walking out of the basketball court with several other boys, their laughter filled with excitement and joy. Though their eyes did not meet, Lin Ke’er unconsciously stopped and followed their figures with her gaze.
Shen Haoran was tall, his stride light and powerful. The sunlight draped over him, highlighting his handsome features. He was different from the boy in her memories, appearing more mature and determined. A complex emotion flickered in Lin Ke’er’s heart; even though a significant distance had grown between them, she could still feel that familiar warmth and intimacy.
"Ke’er?" A crisp voice pulled her back from her thoughts.
She turned to see Xiao Mei walking toward her with a smile: "Who are you looking at?"
Lin Ke’er was startled for a moment, then shook her head with a smile: "Nothing, I was just thinking about something."
Xiao Mei stared at her for a few seconds, as if wanting to say something, but ultimately held back, only nodding: "Let’s go, let’s get back and rest. There’s another mock exam tomorrow."
"Yes," Lin Ke’er nodded softly, walking toward the dormitory with Xiao Mei.
Despite the turmoil in her heart, she knew she had to emerge from these trivial emotions. Her future did not depend on anyone else; it relied on her own constant effort to embrace what lay ahead. At that moment, her resolve became unshakable. She believed that, no matter what, she would carve out a path of her own.
That night, Lin Ke’er continued her revision according to her plan, trying to keep those worries at bay. She picked up her mathematics textbook, carefully working through every problem, attempting to immerse herself fully in the sea of knowledge. As time ticked away, her head grew heavy, and sleepiness crept in. She rubbed her eyes and checked the clock—it was already late into the night.
She stood up and walked to the window, pulling back the curtains to look out at the campus. Moonlight, like water, spilled over the ground, and the quiet campus seemed to be in deep slumber. Lin Ke’er took a deep breath, relaxing her tense nerves. She knew her youth had only just begun, and all the confusion and uncertainty would eventually find answers as time flowed on.
She bowed her head, smiled, and closed her eyes, whispering to herself: "I will keep moving forward, unafraid of the future."
The moonlight outside grew deeper, reflecting on her face and framing her silhouette in a soft halo. She leaned against the window frame, staring into the distance with a quiet ripple in her heart. Every night, there were such moments—moments of solitude for contemplation and peace. She had grown accustomed to being alone, under the silent night sky, thinking of the future and recalling the past. Whether it concerned the college entrance exam or those subtle, complex emotions, she hoped to calm down and find her own rhythm.
"What are you thinking about?" A gentle voice suddenly came from behind her.
Lin Ke’er turned to see Xiao Mei standing at the door, holding a book, her eyes filled with a touch of curiosity and concern. Her features seemed slightly tired from the day's busyness, yet she still wore a look of pure kindness.
"It’s nothing," Lin Ke’er smiled slightly, gesturing to the book on her desk. "I was just thinking about how I did on today's mock exam."
Xiao Mei walked in, placed her book gently on the desk, and sat on the edge of the bed. She looked down at Lin Ke’er’s desk, which was piled high with review materials and notes. "You really are a top student; you study so diligently every time."
Lin Ke’er didn’t answer, only giving a light smile. She knew Xiao Mei’s words weren't just a compliment, but a sign of understanding and care. For her, studying was not just for grades, but to give herself a goal to chase and a reason to persevere.
Xiao Mei looked up, her gaze lingering on Lin Ke’er’s face for a moment before she seemed to recall something. "Ke’er, I saw Shen Haoran this afternoon. He seems to be busy preparing for the basketball tournament again; he’s really giving it his all."
Lin Ke’er’s heart stirred, but she maintained a calm expression and asked softly: "Is he very busy lately?"
Xiao Mei nodded, a teasing smile appearing on her face: "Not only busy, but he keeps telling everyone to prepare well so as not to embarrass the class." She paused. "He really is becoming more and more mature."
Lin Ke’er’s gaze drifted toward the window, landing on the distant basketball court. An indescribable emotion surged within her. Shen Haoran had always been a figure in her world filled with sunshine and confidence. Once upon a time, he had been an important presence in her youth, as if all the light in the world resided in his smile. Now, he still stood within her line of sight, as dazzling as ever, but she knew the distance between them had grown too great.
"What’s wrong?" Xiao Mei noticed the change in her mood and immediately came over to pat her shoulder. "Are you too tired? With the exam approaching, it’s normal to feel the pressure."
Lin Ke’er snapped back to reality and smiled at Xiao Mei, a trace of helplessness in her eyes. "Yes, maybe I'm just a little tired. Tell me, why does every second before the exam feel so important? It’s just an exam, yet it feels like it’s deciding my fate."
Xiao Mei chuckled softly and said gently: "Because this is the most important thing for us right now. But you know what? No matter the result, every day you’ve spent working hard will become the most cherished memory. You’ve already done a great job."
Lin Ke’er listened quietly to Xiao Mei’s words, a wave of warmth washing over her. She realized that this friend who had accompanied her all along had long since provided her with the most support during her most confused times. Although she often felt insecure and wanted to give up, it was because of Xiao Mei’s companionship that she found the strength to keep going.
"Thank you, Xiao Mei," Lin Ke’er whispered, a spark of gratitude in her eyes.
Xiao Mei smiled and stood up, patting her on the head: "Don't thank me, you’re my best friend. I’ve said it before, I’ll walk this path with you, no matter what."
Lin Ke’er looked at Xiao Mei’s warm face, and a sense of being moved welled up within her. She understood that everything Xiao Mei said was not just comfort; she truly regarded her as her closest friend, and she felt the same. In these years of youth, they walked side by side; regardless of what the future held, at this moment, they were each other’s most authentic presence.
The night deepened, and the wind outside blew gently, carrying a chill but also a sense of tranquility. Lin Ke’er stood up, stretched, and walked to the desk to pick up her book again. At this moment, she seemed to have rediscovered that initial persistence. Although there was still some confusion in her heart, she would continue to move forward with effort.
"The college entrance exam is my answer to my own youth," she whispered to herself, her fingers tracing the pages. "No matter what the future holds, I will give it my all."
Xiao Mei echoed softly from the side: "Yes, we must both give our all for our own futures."
The two exchanged a look of tacit understanding, their smiles meeting in each other's eyes. These years of youth, though filled with regrets and imperfections, were ones they knew would be their most precious memories, regardless of the outcome, because of the support and companionship they shared.
