Chapter Eleven: The Tenderness of Parting
The day of the college entrance examination drew ever closer, and every leaf on campus seemed to be making its final preparations for the impending farewell. Whether it was the rising sun or the setting moon, or the first rays of morning light, all seemed to remind Lin Ke’er that time was slipping away. Shen Haoran’s departure was no longer a distant future but a reality looming just ahead.
Though her heart was heavy with countless regrets, Lin Ke’er knew she could not stop what was about to happen. Their relationship had always been like this—silent understanding between them, yet neither possessed the courage to take the next step. Now, having finally laid bare their feelings, they still had to confront the fact that they would soon part ways.
At dusk, Lin Ke’er often liked to walk alone to a quiet corner of the campus, where a bush bursting with flowers grew—a place she and Shen Haoran had often strolled together. More than once, she silently wished for time to freeze at that moment, with no separation, no regrets. Yet she knew such a beautiful dream could never last forever.
That evening, Lin Ke’er and Shen Haoran walked side by side through the flowering bushes. Their steps were light, as though afraid to break the serene atmosphere. Shen Haoran’s gaze was deep, a faint smile tugging at his lips, as if he too wanted to engrave this moment in his heart.
“Ke’er, the sky is so beautiful today,” Shen Haoran suddenly said, his voice low and gentle.
Lin Ke’er looked up, watching the horizon tinting orange, a surge of indescribable emotion welling within her. “Yes, the summer sky is always especially beautiful,” she replied with a smile, though she knew this beauty was destined to be fleeting.
“I wish this time could last forever,” Shen Haoran’s tone carried a trace of melancholy. “But sadly, everything must come to an end.”
Lin Ke’er’s heart tightened sharply. She lowered her gaze and sighed softly. “Haoran, I... really don’t want you to leave.” Her voice trembled, filled with helplessness and pain.
Shen Haoran stopped and turned to face her. The air seemed to freeze, and the surrounding scenery blurred in that instant. He reached out to gently brush her hair, eyes full of deep reluctance and tenderness. “I know, Ke’er. I don’t want to leave you either,” he said warmly and firmly. “But some things we can’t change.”
Lin Ke’er said nothing, bowing her head as she fought back tears. She understood she could not stop Shen Haoran from leaving, nor could she ask him to give up his future. Yet the pain in her heart clung to her like a shadow, unbearable to bear.
“What am I supposed to do after you’re gone?” she finally asked in a low voice, tinged with unease and confusion.
Shen Haoran looked at her, hesitation flickering in his eyes. He knew Lin Ke’er was struggling as never before. Not only did she have feelings for him, but Shen Haoran had already become a part of her world. Perhaps she hadn’t realized how deeply her heart had come to depend on the boy who had always stood by her side.
“You will find your own path, do what you love, and live a life that belongs to you,” Shen Haoran said quietly. “Each of us must learn to be independent, to face our own futures. You’re strong, you know that?”
Lin Ke’er lifted her head, tears shimmering in her eyes, but she stubbornly maintained her smile. “I know what you mean. Thank you.” Her tone was soft yet unyielding.
Shen Haoran nodded silently, a sharp pain gripping his heart. He knew Lin Ke’er was ready to endure all the pain this love might bring, yet she never allowed others to see her vulnerable side. She always hid herself deeply, unwilling even to reveal her truest feelings.
“Haoran...” Lin Ke’er suddenly spoke, urgency in her voice. “I’m really scared—scared I’ll never see you again, scared our feelings will become strangers.”
Shen Haoran met her gaze, tenderness flickering in his eyes. “Ke’er, time changes many things, but it won’t change how I feel about you. No matter where we are, we’ll always have each other in our hearts.”
Lin Ke’er nodded gently, though she knew these were merely Shen Haoran’s reassurances. In the days to come, they would each walk their own path, and no one could foresee what might happen. But no matter what, the time they had leaned on each other would be etched forever in her heart, becoming a lifetime memory.
The fading glow of dusk bathed them both, light and shadow intertwining as if freezing everything in that moment. Lin Ke’er took a deep breath, steadying her emotions. She knew the day of parting was near, and she must learn how to face it.
Shen Haoran gently clasped her hand and spoke softly, “We won’t forget each other. Remember, no matter what happens, I’ll always be in your heart.”
Lin Ke’er looked up at him, determination shining through her eyes. “I will remember you too, no matter what the future holds.”
Beneath the setting sun, they smiled at each other, as if all the sorrow and pain in that moment had transformed into an eternal, beautiful memory. Though the farewell was imminent, the feelings they shared would never truly end.
