Chapter Thirteen: Ripples in the Calm
Lily walked back to the dormitory alone, her steps light while her heart was tangled with conflicting emotions. The scene before her was familiar: sunlight filtered through the campus willow trees, casting dappled shadows across the ground, while a gentle breeze carried the fresh fragrance of summer grass. Yet she could no longer return to the carefree girl she had once been, the girl whose days were filled with laughter and joy. Ever since she had confessed her feelings to Ethan, her world had grown increasingly complicated, filled with anticipation and unease, happiness and sorrow, as though every breath hinted at some approaching change.
She passed the classroom buildings and saw her classmates, just as busy as ever. Some bent over their exercises, while others stood in groups of three or four on the sports field, chatting and laughing as though nothing had happened. Lily could not help stopping. Her gaze gradually settled on a group of students in the distance, and she suddenly realized that she no longer seemed to belong among them.
Although she still sat in the classroom, still joined the morning runs, and still discussed homework and examinations with everyone else, her heart had already drifted quietly beyond the familiar campus, following Ethan as he went away.
These days, she no longer laughed as freely as before, and the changes in her mood had become impossible to ignore. Whenever she remembered Ethan’s departure, waves stirred within her. He had taken with him a part of her innocence and expectation, and through that farewell, she too had changed without realizing it. There was no clear moment to mark the transformation, but she knew that something within her was undergoing a profound metamorphosis.
When she reached the dormitory, Lily saw several of her roommates gathered below the building. They were discussing the approaching college entrance examination.
“Are you all ready?” one of the girls asked with a smile, though her eyes shone with unmistakable nervousness.
“Ready or not, what else can we do?” another girl replied, spreading her hands helplessly. “All we can do now is study as hard as possible. Once the exam is over, we can finally relax.”
Lily did not join the conversation. She lowered her head and walked straight toward her room. Her heart felt heavy. She understood that the examination was something everyone had to face, yet she no longer possessed the easy confidence with which she had once confronted everything. Every subject and every test paper seemed to force her to face one unsolved mystery after another. Ethan’s departure had only made her emotions more complicated. At times, she felt the space within her growing smaller and more desolate, as though no person or thing could ever fill the emptiness inside.
Back at her bed, Lily did not hurry to pick up her books. Instead, she sat quietly, gripping her knees with both hands. Outside the window, everything remained as familiar as ever. The setting sun poured through the glass, its golden light dancing in the corners of the room and illuminating her face. Her eyes slowly closed, her long lashes casting slender shadows in the sunlight, as though she were lost in thought.
Suddenly, a knock broke the silence.
Lily lifted her head toward the door and said softly, “Come in.”
The door opened, and her roommate May stepped inside. May was a bright, cheerful girl who could always lift people’s spirits with her radiant smile. Seeing Lily sitting blankly on the bed, May frowned and walked over.
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unhappy?”
Lily managed a faint smile. “It’s nothing. I’m just a little tired.”
May sat down beside her and studied her carefully. She seemed to notice something and let out a quiet sigh.
“You haven’t been very happy lately, have you? I know you and Ethan have always been close. Is it because… he’s leaving?”
There was a trace of concern in her voice, and an unintentional tenderness in her gaze.
Lily nodded lightly. “Yes. He’s leaving. I know it was bound to happen sooner or later, but I still feel so empty inside.”
May listened in silence and did not answer at once. She gently patted Lily’s shoulder.
“I understand how you feel. What the two of you share must be very deep. But you also have to remember that life brings moments like this. Separation isn’t the end. Sometimes, it’s a new beginning.”
Lily looked at May. The sorrow and disappointment in her eyes were gradually replaced by an unfamiliar warmth. She smiled.
“Thank you, May.”
She knew that although her feelings were confused, she was not alone. She still had friends around her, and the companionship of those who had walked beside her through every difficult moment.
“You don’t have to thank me.” May shook her head with a smile. “We’ll still see each other in the future.”
She glanced out the window, as though considering something.
“Besides, after the exam, we can go somewhere together and relax. Maybe take a little trip. You might feel better.”
Lily’s heart stirred. Looking at May, she suddenly felt a kind of comfort she had not known for a long time. She nodded, determination flickering in her eyes.
“Yes. After the exam, we’ll go somewhere together.”
Her voice was no longer so weighed down, and a faint smile appeared on her face.
The evening sunlight streamed through the curtains, and its warmth soothed her. Although she still could not let go of her concern for Ethan, she understood that he was not the only person in the world. She still had herself, as well as the people around her who cared about her.
The bell for evening study rang. Lily gathered her books and prepared to return to the classroom. She rose and took a deep breath, feeling that her heart had grown somewhat lighter.
Yes, life was still moving forward. The road ahead might be filled with challenges, but she also understood that only by continuing onward, one step at a time, could she find the direction that belonged to her.
That night, Lily listened attentively in class as usual, doing her best to concentrate. Yet from time to time, her gaze still strayed toward the window. In that direction, Ethan was walking farther and farther away from her.
Perhaps this was simply their fate. And perhaps she, too, had to learn to let go and face the unknown that awaited her.
Outside, the night deepened. The classroom lights remained bright, and Lily’s heart slowly grew calm.
She knew that although her youth no longer had Ethan’s companionship, it could still shine with its own brilliance.
This chapter portrays Lily as she gradually adjusts to the pain of an approaching separation and draws strength from the companionship and comfort of her friend. The emotional development unfolds slowly, focusing on the changes within her heart and her efforts to regain her balance. Through the surrounding scenery and her interactions with those around her, the chapter shows her gradually emerging from confusion and sorrow, moving toward maturity and personal growth.
