Chapter 28: Drawing Ever Closer
It was another bright, sunny morning. The parasol trees on campus had begun to sprout fresh leaves, and the air was filled with the clean scent of earth mingled with the fragrance of flowers and grass. Lin Ke’er walked toward the classroom building with a light step. Sunlight streamed through the gaps between the branches, falling across her body while her shadow swayed along the ground.
Today, she felt far more at ease than usual. Though small ripples still stirred within her, she was no longer forcing herself to suppress them. As for her feelings toward Shen Haoran, she had finally decided to stop running from them. She still could not claim to face them with complete composure, but at least she was willing to acknowledge that her heart had begun to stir.
Just as she was about to turn into the classroom building, she suddenly heard a familiar voice.
“Ke’er!”
She turned around and saw Shen Haoran approaching from a short distance away. His back was straight, his stride steady, and he held a book in one hand. Today he was wearing his school uniform, with a white T-shirt over his basketball jersey. Sunlight fell upon him, seeming to cloak him in a warm halo. That radiant, sunlit presence still made Lin Ke’er’s heart race.
“Morning, Lin Ke’er!” Shen Haoran called with a smile as he walked toward her. There was a bright glimmer in his eyes, as though sunlight had entered her heart.
“Morning...” Lin Ke’er answered softly, a faint smile appearing on her face.
As the distance between them gradually narrowed, Lin Ke’er suddenly felt a subtle tension, and her heartbeat quickened despite herself. Shen Haoran’s presence was as captivating as ever—perhaps even more so than before. She knew that this attraction had grown from a faint spark at the beginning into something increasingly unmistakable. Although she still had not fully understood what she felt for him, she could already sense the weight of those emotions.
“We don’t have many classes today. Are you free this afternoon?” Shen Haoran suddenly asked, his voice carrying a hint of ease and anticipation.
“Mm. I have one class in the afternoon, so I may not be free until later.” Lin Ke’er looked up at him, the corners of her lips curving slightly. “Why?”
“Would you like to go to the library and study together?” Shen Haoran asked casually, without the slightest pressure in his tone, as though it were nothing more than an ordinary invitation.
Lin Ke’er froze for a moment, a trace of panic rising in her heart. The library—Shen Haoran had suggested that they study together. What did that mean? They had occasionally interacted during class activities, but this seemed to be the first time they would be alone together like this.
She hesitated, then looked up at him, confusion flickering in her eyes. She knew that this opportunity was important. If she accepted, perhaps it would mark a step forward in her relationship with Shen Haoran, forcing her to confront the feelings hidden within her heart. Yet if she refused, it might seem as though she were deliberately keeping her distance.

“All right. Since it’s for studying, I happen to have a few things I need to sort out as well.” Lin Ke’er took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. “Then I’ll see you this afternoon.”
“Wonderful!” Shen Haoran broke into a dazzling smile, delight flashing in his eyes. “I’ll wait for you.”
Looking at his smile, Lin Ke’er felt her heart stir, and a smile appeared on her face before she could stop it. Shen Haoran was always like this, as though he had been born with a warmth that made everyone around him feel at ease.
The two of them went into their respective classrooms. Lin Ke’er could not help thinking about the afternoon ahead. She had thought the pressure of the college entrance examination was already more than enough, yet Shen Haoran’s invitation had unexpectedly awakened a sense of excitement she had not felt in a long time. After returning to her seat, her gaze drifted unconsciously toward the window, while the small promise they had made left her emotions gently unsettled.
During the afternoon class, Lin Ke’er was not as focused as usual. Her thoughts wandered constantly. From time to time, she glanced toward Shen Haoran, who sat ahead of her. The way he listened attentively always made her look twice, and whenever their eyes happened to meet, her heart began to race for no reason.
She did not want to admit that she had started paying attention to everything Shen Haoran did. Yet her heart was finding it increasingly impossible to ignore that growing flutter.
At last, the afternoon classes ended. Lin Ke’er quickly packed her schoolbag, steadied her emotions, and left the classroom. Shen Haoran had already been waiting in the corridor. The moment he saw her, he came toward her with a warm smile.
“Let’s go. We’ll head to the library together.”
“Mm.” Lin Ke’er nodded, a faint nervousness rising within her. She lowered her gaze to the books in her hands and suddenly felt that they were unusually heavy, as though they carried far more meaning than they normally did.
The library was not far from the classroom building, and they arrived within a few minutes. Shen Haoran pushed open the doors and led her inside. The lights were soft, the books on the shelves neatly arranged, and the air carried the scent of paper and ink.
The library had always been one of Lin Ke’er’s favorite places. Its quiet atmosphere, steeped in knowledge, allowed her to find peace within herself.
“Let’s find somewhere to sit,” Shen Haoran said with a smile, leading her to a table by the window.
“All right.” Lin Ke’er nodded and took a seat on one side of the table. Sunlight streamed in through the window, illuminating her books and notes with a warm glow.
Shen Haoran sat down as well, opened his book, and began to read. The two of them did not immediately discuss anything specific. Instead, they simply enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. Every so often, Shen Haoran would lower his head and smile at her before returning to his studies.
Lin Ke’er felt somewhat lost. She discovered that she could hardly concentrate on her work. Instead, her thoughts were drawn toward him again and again.

After quite some time, Shen Haoran suddenly looked up at her. There was a trace of tenderness in his eyes.
“You don’t seem quite yourself today. What’s wrong? Is something troubling you?”
Lin Ke’er froze, surprised that he had noticed something was wrong. She paused, struggling inwardly, and finally answered in a low voice, “It’s nothing. I’m just a little tired. We’ve had so many classes lately, and the pressure is getting to me.”
“The college entrance examination is certainly exhausting, but you still need to get enough rest.” Shen Haoran smiled, his gaze gentle. “If the pressure becomes too much, take a break. It’s all right.”
Lin Ke’er looked up at him, gratitude filling her eyes. Shen Haoran was always like this. He seemed to notice the feelings others left unspoken, yet he cared for them without ever making them feel burdened. His warmth and kindness gave her an overwhelming sense of security, but they also made the emotions in her heart even more complicated.
“Thank you, Shen Haoran.” She smiled faintly, though another inexplicable feeling rose within her.
“I’ll always be here. Go and do whatever it is you want to do.” Shen Haoran’s voice remained gentle, carrying a warmth that was difficult to resist.
Lin Ke’er nodded softly and lowered her head, her heart filled with ripples. She knew that she could no longer maintain the calmness she had possessed at the beginning. The flutter in her heart was already beyond her control.
Perhaps love was like this quiet library—hidden deep within, only to be gradually awakened.
