Chapter 21: The Pursuit of Dreams
At dawn’s first light, Lin Ke’er stood on the school playground, her gaze as clear as the newly risen sun, a quiet resolve stirring within her heart. Today marked the beginning of a new journey. The days until the college entrance examination were drawing ever closer. Though every moment was a race against time, she felt no panic. After a period of hard work and self-adjustment, Lin Ke’er had finally found her own rhythm, learning to seek calm amid the pressure.
“Ke’er, are you ready?” Xiao Mei ran up, flashing her a radiant smile.
“Yes, I’m ready.” Lin Ke’er smiled gently and took her hand. “Let’s run a lap together to relax.”
More and more students were gathering for their morning run. Though their steps were hurried, they all shared the same goal. Lin Ke’er and Xiao Mei walked side by side, their pace light, their spirits unusually cheerful. Unlike usual tense discussions, they simply savored this moment of freedom and ease.
Sunlight filtered through the campus trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Beside the playground, the flowerbeds bloomed, petals swaying softly in the breeze, releasing a fresh fragrance. Lin Ke’er took a deep breath, embracing the tranquility and beauty, as if every breath carried a promise of the future.
“Xiao Mei, what do you think we’ll become after the exam?” Lin Ke’er asked suddenly, her eyes drifting into the distance.
Xiao Mei paused briefly, then smiled. “We’ll grow more mature, become better versions of ourselves. Maybe we’ll feel some reluctance, but in the end, we’ll each step into our own futures.”
“Mm.” Lin Ke’er nodded, her heart filled with complex emotions. She knew graduation was approaching, and like everyone else, she would embark on a new chapter. She might no longer be the naive girl she once was; perhaps she would become stronger and braver. But all these transformations quietly took root in the soil of her growth.
As they continued running, her heart gradually found peace. She realized that no matter what the future held, she was no longer lost or afraid. Past emotions and entanglements had slowly been released from the depths of her soul. Now, her sole purpose was to walk firmly toward her own future.
“Ke’er, look over there!” Xiao Mei suddenly exclaimed excitedly, pointing to a corner of the playground.
Lin Ke’er followed her gaze to the distant basketball court, where several boys were fiercely playing. Shen Haoran stood by the sidelines, watching the game with a relaxed smile. Her heart skipped a beat, but she didn’t avert her eyes. Instead, she gently pulled her gaze away and kept walking.
Xiao Mei glanced at her softly and asked, “Do you think there’s still a story between you two?”
“Maybe.” Lin Ke’er’s voice was gentle, tinged with thoughtfulness. “But now, I’m no longer the girl who depended on him or pinned all her hopes on him. I have my own future and won’t lose myself again.”
“Mm, that’s wonderful.” Xiao Mei smiled and nodded. “Everyone’s future belongs to themselves.”
Lin Ke’er was silent for a moment, then nodded, silently making a decision within. She had stepped out of the shadow of the past, no longer relying on anyone but herself to chase the dreams that belonged to her.
In the afternoon study hall, Lin Ke’er sat quietly at her desk, the tip of her pen gliding across the exam paper, each stroke deliberate and precise. Her eyes were focused, as if the entire world had frozen in that moment—only the books and questions remained. She tackled each problem with care, her gaze free from anxiety or worry, filled instead with confidence and determination.
Around her, classmates immersed themselves in study, the classroom thick with the atmosphere of diligent preparation. Lin Ke’er occasionally lifted her eyes to the sunlight streaming through the window, her heart brimming with hope for what lay ahead. She knew the dreams she pursued were not distant—they were drawing nearer with every second of effort.
“Ke’er, take a break, you’ve been at it for a long time.” Xiao Mei’s voice came from beside her, breaking her reverie.
Lin Ke’er smiled, setting down her pen and stretching her shoulders gently. “Thanks for reminding me. A break sounds good.”
She rose and moved to the window, gazing out at the scene beyond. The school’s flowerbeds bloomed riotously in vibrant hues, bathed in golden sunlight that shimmered on the petals. Lin Ke’er inhaled deeply, savoring the peaceful beauty.
“You know, Ke’er, sometimes I really envy you,” Xiao Mei said suddenly, her voice softening.
“Envy me?” Lin Ke’er was slightly taken aback and turned to look at her. “Why?”
“You’re always so resolute, never hesitant.” Xiao Mei smiled lightly. “Sometimes I doubt myself, worry my future won’t be bright. But you—you always know exactly what you want.”
Lin Ke’er smiled and patted her shoulder. “Actually, I’ve felt lost before too. Everyone has doubts and fears, but we can’t let them trap us. Just remember, no matter how hard it gets, keep moving forward. The future will give you the answers.”
Xiao Mei looked at her, a flicker of emotion shining in her eyes. “Thank you. It’s so good to have a friend like you.”
“It’s nothing. We’re best friends.” Lin Ke’er smiled, warmth and steadfastness coloring her voice.
Time passed unknowingly. Lin Ke’er spent countless days and nights in this campus, her mindset steadily transforming. She no longer clung to memories of the past but turned her gaze toward a broader future. Every mock exam, every effort became a stepping stone toward her dreams. Her youth was no longer filled with confusion, but with strength and hope.
That evening, Lin Ke’er stood once again on the playground, watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon. Her heart was calm as still water, but her eyes sparkled with resolve. She knew that no matter what the future held, she would walk forward courageously—because she had found her own path.
“Ke’er, come on, let’s go have dinner together.” Xiao Mei approached, smiling as she took her hand.
“All right.” Lin Ke’er smiled and nodded, walking toward the cafeteria with her.
On this campus road nearing its end, Lin Ke’er understood that though the road ahead was filled with challenges, she no longer feared. She had her own determination, her own dreams. She would press forward, bravely chasing the tomorrow that belonged to her.
