――――

Wait!

I had lost count of how many times I had stopped to wait for “Doctor Ye.” I had even less idea how many times Doctor Ye had welcomed me with those aggrieved, green-glowing eyes.

Small wonder. After merely one trip to the bank, I had returned looking like an entirely different person. This outfit not only drew flirtatious glances from the female newcomers in town; even the men had turned into pairs of blood-red wolf eyes brimming with jealousy.

Even Doctor Ye, who was fairly handsome to begin with, looked utterly like a guide when he stood beside me, completely ignored by everyone around us…

What he found even harder to accept was the difference in speed once I activated Haste Step. It was like a bicyclist running into someone riding a motorcycle taxi!

Before a single Haste Step had ended, I had already left Doctor Ye more than ten yards behind.

His feelings at that moment were easy to imagine…

Fortunately, I had not forgotten that Doctor Ye was the local expert here. Without him, I would have had no idea where to find the leveling grounds that could send me soaring through the ranks. But wasn’t our destination a little too far away? I had stopped dozens of times already. My Haste Step proficiency had risen by several dozen points, and we still had not reached the end.

…

More than ten minutes later, Doctor Ye finally stopped!

I looked around at the small hollow where he had halted. It was lush with blue-green vegetation and possessed an exceptionally beautiful landscape. My gaze quickly swept over several magical beasts in the distance, all around level twenty, and I finally let out a long sigh of relief.

We had arrived!

As far as the eye could see, not a single player was visible anywhere in the hollow. A considerable number of deer-like magical beasts nearby bent their necks, each more than a yard long, and licked the green grass from the ground. They lent the beautiful valley an extraordinary air of tranquility, making it difficult to believe that they were actually level-twenty-one magical beasts.

…Phew. Even his choice of leveling grounds was so poetic and picturesque. Doctor Ye truly was an exceptional guide… Unlike that fellow Falcon, who always picked places inhabited by skeletons and ghosts. Staying too long in those sorts of locations was liable to leave a person psychologically scarred.

This place was perfect—not only quiet and beautiful, but the magical beasts also appeared to be unusually docile…

Heh heh. Excellent, excellent. They looked like magical beasts that would be easy to butcher and turn into experience.

Heh heh. It was a little cruel, perhaps, but seeing as how I currently enjoyed bullying the weak, I supposed I would simply have to be cruel for a while.

However…

Just as I charged forward with a satisfied grin, Doctor Ye, who had remained silent behind me all this time, suddenly revealed a sly glint in his eyes. With a faint smile, he quietly drew his bow.

…

Long Shot!

A beautiful long-range shot blossomed into a blood-red flower on the “Snow Deer’s” delicate body. Then something nightmarish happened—the docile little deer underwent a complete one-hundred-and-eighty-degree transformation!

Its gentle blue eyes abruptly turned icy cold. With an angry glare, it twisted its head, and at the same time its body shot forward like an arrow loosed from a bow…

Seeing that figure moving at a speed almost comparable to my Haste Step, I felt as though something had slammed violently into my chest. I could not help drawing in a sharp breath.

Damn it! With that kind of speed, you call this an easy magical beast to bully?

“Doctor Ye, you set me up!” By the time I realized it, it was already too late. The Snow Deer had almost instantly charged within twenty yards of me and continued rushing forward without slowing.

A formidable surge of magical power rapidly gathered upon the Snow Deer’s small antlers. In the blink of an eye, three enormous ice spikes, each half a yard long, appeared out of thin air above its head!

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh…

Before I could activate Haste Step, the ice spikes shot out in rapid succession!

“The Snow Deer dealt 5 points of damage!”

“The Snow Deer dealt 4 points of damage!”

My replacement second-tier equipment had raised my magic resistance to eight. The magic of a level-twenty-one magical beast could not inflict overly serious damage upon me.

But I had not forgotten the terrifying freezing properties of water magic…

The bone-chilling cold would have turned me into an ice sculpture by now if the Gale Set had not shielded me from most of the frigid air clinging to those ice spikes.

I immediately refused to linger. Ignoring everything else, I swiftly raised my bow and fired a “Slow Arrow.” After practicing for an entire night, I could now release it almost instantaneously!

“Target hit. The Snow Deer suffered 43 points of damage!”

“Slow effect activated. Duration: 5 seconds!”

The Slow Arrow had failed to trigger its slowing effect all night, but at last it did not disappoint me! The very first arrow brought the Snow Deer’s movements to an abrupt halt.

Even so, I still could not relax. The Snow Deer was less than ten yards away. Even with its movement speed reduced, it could easily launch a second wave of water magic at me!

Just as I was preparing to charge forward, an arrow imbued with powerful piercing force shot past me toward the Snow Deer ten yards away.

At the same time, Doctor Ye warned, “Don’t go over there. The Snow Deer’s Frost Ring is incredibly powerful. If you don’t want to turn into a popsicle, stay here and finish it with me! You slow it down, and I’ll pierce it!”

His warning made me immediately pull back and choose to cooperate. That did not mean, however, that I had forgotten how close I had come to being frozen into a popsicle.

“You bastard! You’d better give me a reasonable explanation later! Otherwise, I’ll shoot you full of holes!”

As I spoke, I rapidly fired another Slow Arrow, sending the Snow Deer back into a slowed state.

At almost the same moment, the Snow Deer’s second wave of ice spikes once again descended upon my head.

This time I was thoroughly depressed. Although I managed to dodge two of the ice spikes in time, I could not help rolling my eyes and shooting Doctor Ye a swift glance.

What was going on? That fellow was clearly using the strongest second-tier skill. How was it possible that the Snow Deer was still targeting me?

Could it be…

While I was fuming, Doctor Ye stood twenty yards away from the Snow Deer, his face wearing an even more astonished expression.

He had originally intended to use the Scavenging Qilin’s Slow Arrow to complete a quest he had accepted long ago but never managed to finish. Who could have known…

“Damn it! Your ordinary attacks aren’t actually a whole level stronger than mine, are they? …I’m done for! Stop it!”
