――――

Entering Greenfield Town, I suddenly realized that this place was vastly different from the quaint little town I had imagined.

Originally, I thought a town of this size would be smaller than Frostgate City and probably quite shabby and rundown; but what I saw before me was terrifying!

This was no ordinary town—it was a fully militarized stronghold!

The entire town seemed nestled within the embrace of a towering, majestic peak behind it, with the city walls seamlessly integrated into the mountainside, forming a massive natural barrier protecting the city on three sides!

The only open side was blocked by a colossal wall, even grander and more magnificent than that of Frostgate City.

Tall, imposing, and extraordinarily solid!

Under the night sky, Greenfield Town appeared perfectly fused with the mountain, giving the illusion that the town was bravely standing against the entire peak itself... as if challenging the very earth!

Even more striking, the city was guarded every few steps, with a dense presence of elite guards ready for battle.

On the battlements, thousands of various specialized soldiers stood in formation, poised for combat at any moment!

I couldn’t help but gasp sharply...

Heavens!

This town was truly...

Damn it, Greenfield Town had completely shattered my preconceived notions!

What lay before me resembled a frontier stronghold perpetually on high alert—a city prepared for war at any given moment, with its guards like a fully equipped army ready to plunge into fierce battle at a moment’s notice.

At this point, I nearly set aside my original purpose for coming here, wandering the streets and battlements to soak in the intense, pre-war atmosphere and the powerful visual impact that Frostgate City could never provide.

...

Half an hour later, I climbed up to the battlements and stopped midway along the wall.

With my back to the endless darkness beyond Greenfield Town, I gazed at the towering, cloud-piercing black peak before me... then quickly scanned the city’s layout and buildings...

Looking down at this brightly lit ‘town’ below, I sighed deeply from the heart:

Phew... No mistake!

Greenfield Town was undoubtedly a militarized stronghold built for war!

Moreover, Greenfield Town occupied a very special geographical position within the Knight Empire—either a border outpost or a more critical transit city than Frostgate. The former seemed more likely, as no small town in the empire’s heartland would station such a large military force.

Furthermore!

The battlements were wide, indicating that Greenfield’s walls were even thicker and sturdier than Frostgate’s. Coupled with the vast number of soldiers on the battlements and the city’s strict defenses, this was clearly no ordinary, obscure town!

However...

For such a grand and strategically important stronghold, its population was surprisingly sparse...

I couldn’t understand it as I overlooked the entire city. Despite the bright lights, the number of players in Greenfield Town barely reached a few hundred—less than the number of players on a single street in Frostgate City.

It was simply unbelievable!

“...Is it really just because of the presence of Ghost Lake?”

As I pondered this, I found myself growing deeply curious about Greenfield Town and everything surrounding it. Turning towards the edge of the city walls facing the darkness outside, I gazed out.

Beyond Greenfield, the endless darkness stretched out, and at its center lay Ghost Lake—its very existence explaining why I hadn’t seen a single person leave Greenfield for a long time.

It was easy to imagine that Ghost Lake was a forbidden zone for almost all players within Greenfield Town.

Even I had temporarily abandoned any thought of venturing beyond the city to investigate.

Just then, a sudden voice broke the silence atop the battlements:

“...Is this your first time in Greenfield Town?”

I shifted my gaze and saw a young man approaching from nearby.

Looking around, I realized it was just the two of us on the battlements and confirmed he was speaking to me.

Casting a curious glance at the young man becoming clearer, I furrowed my brow slightly. He looked as young as me, but his equipment was odd.

He wore a set of coarse black cloth garments—the standard outfit given to new players.

However, he was definitely not a civilian, as I couldn’t see through his profile during my earlier scan.

That meant he was at least level 16! Possibly even much higher than me—a classic case of the weak challenging the strong!

With this in mind, I instantly raised my guard and ignored his question, quietly watching him and fixing my gaze on his fairly delicate, handsome face. I said coldly, “What do you want?”

“Heh... Nothing much. I was just curious because in over a month here, you’re the first person I’ve seen lingering on the battlements for so long,” the young man said with a smile, unfazed by my cold response.

He then stepped forward and suddenly extended his hand, saying, “By the way, let me introduce myself. I’m Doctor Ye. Nice to meet you.”

Upon hearing “Doctor Ye,” I nearly burst out laughing!

Stunned, I opened my mouth, staring at him as if he were a strange creature. What era was this where someone still chose such a dated name in a game—and he was about my age too?

Despite my expression, the young man kept smiling warmly, either very pleased with my reaction or very proud of his name.

“Probably more likely a graduate student... and yet calls himself a doctor... what a weirdo.”

That was my first impression of “Doctor Ye.”

Silently looking down on him, I finally returned his smile and shook his hand. “Hello... I’m Scavenger Kirin.”

The moment I spoke, Doctor Ye’s previously pleasant smile turned oddly strange—as if he were doing it on purpose.

“You work on Scavenger Planet too?” Doctor Ye’s eyes widened, and his words took me by surprise: “Too? What do you mean? Could it be...”

“You’re a scavenger from Scavenger Planet as well?”

I couldn’t believe I had met another scavenger here.

At my question, Doctor Ye grew even more excited:

“I’m from Orion. Which star system are you from?”

“I’m from Fairy!” I answered, immediately rolling my eyes in frustration.

Damn it, what kind of rubbish answer was that...
