Chapter 19: The Heiress and the Illegitimate School Bully
After chatting for a long time at the bar with his good friend Chen, Xiao Yi was driven home by him. Dragging his somewhat weary and slightly tipsy body through the door, he was instantly enveloped by the silence and darkness inside. Without turning on the lights, he headed straight for the sofa and collapsed onto it, his mind swirling with memories of moments spent with Song Qian, along with the comfort and advice his friend had offered.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the cracks in the curtains, gently touching Xiao Yi’s face. He slowly opened his eyes, a throbbing headache from the hangover pounding in his skull, yet his gaze held a newfound determination that hadn’t been there the night before. He recalled his friend’s suggestion to see a doctor and summoned the strength to get up and freshen himself.
At the hospital, his friend leveraged his connections to arrange a thorough and meticulous series of examinations for Xiao Yi. Moving between departments, Xiao Yi’s heart fluttered uneasily amid the cold medical instruments and busy healthcare workers. After each test, he anxiously awaited the results, while his friend stayed by his side, attempting to ease his tension with lighthearted conversation.
Finally, with all the tests completed, they sat in the doctor’s office. The physician examined the reports carefully, his expression shifting between seriousness and relief. Xiao Yi clenched the hem of his shirt, beads of sweat forming on his brow, too afraid to utter a sound, dreading any bad news. After a long pause, the doctor removed his glasses and spoke slowly, “The situation is better than we anticipated. Though some health issues remain, with proper treatment and care, there is significant room for improvement.” Hearing this, a heavy weight lifted from Xiao Yi’s chest. He turned to his friend, eyes brimming with gratitude and relief.
Stepping out of the hospital, Xiao Yi’s steps felt lighter. He immediately sent a message to the heroine, letting her know he was coming to pick her up for school. Driving to Song Qian’s home, his mood brightened like never before; even the scenery outside the car window seemed more vivid.
Arriving beneath Song Qian’s building, Xiao Yi tidied his clothes and took a deep breath, trying to steady his heart that trembled slightly with nervous anticipation. Standing at the door, it wasn’t long before Song Qian appeared. Dressed simply in her school uniform, her youthful vitality and beauty shone through effortlessly.
Xiao Yi stepped forward with a gentle smile, his eyes filled with deep affection and longing. “Today, I’m coming with you to school,” he said softly, reaching out and naturally taking Song Qian’s hand. Her cheeks flushed faintly, yet she didn’t pull away, allowing him to lead her toward the car.
On the way to school, Xiao Yi shared the doctor’s diagnosis and his experience with his friend. His voice carried a hopeful longing for the future. Song Qian listened quietly, occasionally glancing at him with eyes full of encouragement and support. She gently squeezed his hand, silently assuring him that no matter what lay ahead, she would stand by his side.
In truth, Song Qian longed to tell Xiao Yi that even without seeing a doctor, she could give him children.
As the car slowly made its way to the school, Xiao Yi and Song Qian laughed and talked, unaware of the looming danger. Upon reaching the school parking lot, a scoundrel appeared suddenly with a group of followers, blocking their path.
The scoundrel wore a twisted grin, malice gleaming in his eyes. “Well, well, isn’t this you two? Looking pretty sweet, huh.” Xiao Yi frowned, stepping protectively in front of Song Qian. “What do you want?” The scoundrel sneered and shouted, “What do I want? You, a mere illegitimate child, dare to act arrogant before me? Your mother’s ugly deeds back then—you thought you could hide them from everyone?” Whispers began to ripple among the nearby crowd upon hearing these words.
