Chapter 102: The Plunder
From Wei Hua’s perspective, the previous extortion plan was merely about helping his own people reclaim what rightfully belonged to them; it was hardly an act of revenge. The few casualties along the way could be considered the cost of doing business. It must be remembered that after the September 30 coup, three hundred thousand ethnic Chinese were massacred in Indonesia. Compared to the crimes committed against them, killing a handful of Indonesians was nothing. Revenge was the true motive behind Wei Hua’s return to Indonesia—he intended to plunge the Indonesians into fear, to cast them into darkness.
On September 3, 1981, Wei Hua returned to Jakarta. His current mission was to sweep through the gangs controlling the city, clearing obstacles for Jiang Hua’s intelligence network, and significantly weaken the Indonesian gangs operating within Jakarta. Wei Hua’s plan involved using gang factions as a cover for Jiang Hua’s intelligence agency. His target was the Indonesian gang once led by the gang leader Jiang Hua had assassinated. This gang was a minor force in East Jakarta, and Wei Hua intended to use them as a test case. The former gang leader, who had been assassinated by Jiang Hua, was already dead; a new leader had been appointed, but the gang’s territory had shrunk considerably. Some of their turf had been seized by rival gangs who had hired Jiang Hua to carry out the killing, sparking fierce battles between the two factions over control of territory. The gang whose leader was killed was known as the White Wolf Gang, while the one that employed Jiang Hua for the assassination was the Hungry Tiger Gang.
On the night of September 4, Wei Hua arrived at a nightclub under the White Wolf Gang’s control, a known hotspot for their members. He observed the venue for some time. Late at night, he stealthily infiltrated the office on the top floor of the club. The office was lavishly decorated. Inside, a man with a wolf’s head tattoo on his body was forcibly ejecting a woman. Wei Hua approached from behind and easily knocked the man unconscious before employing his mind-reading technique to interrogate him. This man was Nai Chai, one of the White Wolf Gang’s key leaders, responsible for managing the nightclub. The White Wolf Gang controlled four such nightclubs, each overseen by one of the gang’s four main enforcers. In addition, they were involved in smuggling drugs and running underground casinos. The new White Wolf boss was Gulima, a man known for his cunning and ruthlessness. He lived alone in a villa in East Jakarta, guarded by dozens of men, and he controlled the gang’s finances.
After extracting the information he sought from Nai Chai, Wei Hua pulled out a silenced pistol and fired a shot to the man’s forehead. He then opened the office safe and took all the cash, ledgers, and drugs inside. The next day, Wei Hua took a taxi to Gulima’s villa and began surveying the terrain outside, using a high-powered military telescope he carried to observe the interior. What Nai Chai had said was entirely true; perhaps because the previous gang leader had just been assassinated, Gulima was fearful of meeting the same fate. The villa was heavily guarded.
That night, Wei Hua once again brazenly absorbed electricity, causing a citywide blackout in Jakarta before slipping into Gulima’s villa. Gulima was asleep in his bedroom. With frequent night blackouts and the ongoing turf war between the White Wolf and Hungry Tiger gangs, Gulima was hiding inside, fearing an assassination attempt. He had already paid a substantial bribe to the deputy police chief who secretly supported the White Wolf Gang, hoping the official would intervene and quell the gang conflict, allowing Gulima to stop hiding in his villa.
Wei Hua used his mind-reading ability again. Gulima knew far more than Nai Chai had. Wei Hua uncovered the White Wolf Gang’s financial accounts, their warehouses, the name of the deputy police chief backing them, and learned that in two days Gulima planned to meet with this deputy and the Hungry Tiger Gang’s leader, alongside a military officer supporting the Hungry Tiger Gang. An idea took shape in Wei Hua’s mind. Without alerting anyone, he released the mental hold and left. Gulima had no idea his secrets had been uncovered.
Returning to his secret weapons cache, Wei Hua spent the night crafting a bomb vest that, at first glance, appeared to be a bulletproof vest but was actually filled with military-grade C4 explosives. The detonator was a miniaturized wireless remote control device Wei Hua had modified himself.
Two nights later, Wei Hua again infiltrated Gulima’s villa. This time, using his mind control, he forcibly altered Gulima’s memory, compelling him to wear the bomb vest when meeting with the Hungry Tiger gang members the following day. Wei Hua also emptied the villa’s safe, taking everything inside before returning to his hideout.
The next day, Wei Hua arrived early outside the hotel where Gulima was to meet the rivals. Shortly after, he saw Gulima and a man in his forties surrounded by a group of thugs enter the hotel. Wei Hua followed the group inside. They proceeded to the fifth-floor restaurant, where Gulima and his companion entered a private room, while their henchmen remained in the main hall. Wei Hua found a corner seat in the hall and waited. Soon another group arrived, evidently members of the Hungry Tiger Gang. Guided by Gulima’s description, Wei Hua identified their leader among them, who also entered the private room with a companion.
Once the two parties were inside, Wei Hua pressed the detonator in his pocket and then boldly exited the restaurant, quickly leaving the hotel. Three minutes later, a deafening explosion shattered the fifth floor, completely destroying it. Nearby windows shattered from the blast. Wei Hua sighed slightly; he had used too much C4—the building was now uninhabitable, a dangerous ruin. Watching the black smoke billowing from the wreckage and the frightened Indonesians scattering in the streets, Wei Hua thought disdainfully: “Afraid already? This is only the beginning.”
