Chapter 11: The "Goddess of Wishes," Amanesis?
Watching as Lady Misfortune displayed no hostility toward Uloius’s arrival, the atmosphere of their conversation gradually returned to its usual casual ease. Seizing the moment, Hermiane spoke without restraint:
“Then, when the opportunity arises, could you send Uloius and me back to our tribe together?”
Relying on sheer luck to penetrate the heart of the Demon Wolf realm was one thing; counting on luck again to escape seemed far too mystical and unreliable in Hermiane’s mind.
It was better to seek help from Lady Misfortune.
“That is possible,” Lady Misfortune replied calmly, though her interest seemed to wane suddenly.
Could it be that after spending time together, she’s reluctant to part with me?
Hermiane found the thought absurd and laughed softly, shaking her head to dismiss it.
Having decided on their course, before the true moment to flee arrived, Uloius would have to remain for the time being. Lady Misfortune was indifferent—there was neither the joy of gaining a new human subject to observe nor the annoyance of an added burden.
Concerned for Uloius’s safety while staying here, Hermiane boldly addressed Lady Misfortune again:
“Lady Misfortune, Uloius’s heightened sensitivity is far too dangerous in a place where one can so easily encounter divine beings… Is there a way to eliminate this threat?”
Lady Misfortune said nothing, but a profound darkness emerged from her fingertips, leaping into the air like an ink drop before falling into Uloius’s eyes.
Having done this, Lady Misfortune finally spoke a warning: “As long as he does not leave the residence, such incidents will not occur.”
A secret sanctuary limited to within the residence?
It would have to suffice.
Standing beside Hermiane, Uloius blinked, sensing nothing strange in his eyes. His sensitivity seemed veiled, yet his spirit felt much lighter.
This relief made his eyelids grow heavy. He had long suffered torment from unknown presences owing to his heightened sensitivity, occasionally glimpsing illusory scenes—whether future or fantasy, he could never tell.
Now, even his spirit was soothed, and he desperately wished to sleep.
Rubbing his drowsy eyes and fighting the urge to fall asleep, Uloius turned his head toward Hermiane and murmured softly:
“Sister Hermiane, could this Demon Wolf lady be the legendary Wish Goddess of the Demon Wolf tribe? They say any wish you make is granted…”
Granted any wish…
Hermiane pondered deeply and realized it was indeed so.
The goddess of misfortune remained unmoved by the exchange between these two humans, her gaze drifting through the bright window to the outside, her expression cooling.
As if she had spotted a thief attempting to steal a bite.
Following Lady Misfortune’s gaze, Hermiane looked out the window and saw a man standing at the door. His eyes were dark as night, but his handsome cheeks were covered with coarse black fur resembling wolf bristles, lending his beauty a wildness.
Who could this be…
Though unfamiliar, he seemed vaguely familiar.
Noticing Hermiane’s stare, the man turned and smiled broadly at her, revealing a mouth full of sharp teeth.
Hermiane recognized him—
He was the giant wolf who wanted to devour her!
The younger brother of the “Mother of the Heavens,” the Demon Wolf cub!
Yet today, this man was politely knocking.
The stone door slowly opened, and the Demon Wolf cub bowed courteously at the threshold. Where he had learned such manners was anyone’s guess: “We meet again, ladies.”
His gaze fell on the drowsy Uloius. “‘Misfortune,’ is this your offspring?”
From the “Mother of the Heavens” to Lady Misfortune and now this cub, Hermiane was nearly desensitized to such remarks. She merely rolled her eyes, even turning her head to watch Lady Misfortune’s reaction for amusement.
Leaning leisurely on a wicker chair, Lady Misfortune still exuded an elegant air. Her posture, expression, and tone remained calm as she acknowledged, “Yes. Cute, isn’t he?”
The Demon Wolf cub studied Uloius seriously and smiled: “I’m unfamiliar with the aesthetics of pan-human races, but personally, I find him quite adorable.”
Adorable, yes—but he’s certainly not my offspring. And who’s child grows so fast from conception to birth in less than half a year...
Hermiane thought wryly, while Uloius, still dozing, actually fell asleep standing up...
But for a Demon Wolf cub, it was normal to be born already in adult form, so he didn’t find it odd that Uloius looked nothing like a baby.
“Have you come to see my offspring?” Lady Misfortune asked lightly.
The Demon Wolf cub’s smile faltered awkwardly. Bored, he had merely wanted to sneak a peek at the woman he almost devoured while Lady Misfortune was away.
He hadn’t expected to run into her at home... To dispel hostility, he even took human form to show goodwill.
I even cast a divination before leaving. The cub thought to himself, feeling unlucky today, perhaps cursed by Lady Misfortune.
“Cursed… huh?” The cub hummed softly, examining the sleeping Uloius. “Is the inheritance from the ‘Misfortune’ side?”
Even high beings could not discern others’ abilities with the naked eye.
Using his keen intuition, the cub sensed that this white-haired male in slumber was truly affecting his own fortune, leading him to conclude the being’s powers were related to “Misfortune.”
Thus, through this twist of fate, the Demon Wolf cub genuinely believed this sleeping human-like creature was Lady Misfortune’s child.
A troublesome little one, just like “Misfortune” herself… The cub lost interest in Uloius, even disdainfully stepping aside. With a half-rational, half-bloodthirsty glance, he looked at Hermiane and asked Lady Misfortune:
“After giving birth… what do you intend to do with this human? If you plan to eat him, might I have the honor of tasting him first?”
Lady Misfortune replied coolly, “It’s rare to find someone agreeable. At least three years and five offspring, then you can stop dreaming.”
These rational Demon Wolves seemed to prefer speaking in Dragon Tongue. Hermiane understood each word of their exchange but found it hard to piece together fully.
What was certain was that the Demon Wolf cub took seriously the notion that Hermiane had borne Lady Misfortune’s offspring, while Lady Misfortune played along to avoid trouble.
Probably just playing a part...
Watching Lady Misfortune’s earnest demeanor and tone, Hermiane felt uneasy.
Although they had lived together for quite some time and gotten along harmoniously, Hermiane often found herself unable to grasp Lady Misfortune’s true thoughts.
It was as if her cohabitant were an aloof, unattainable beauty from an ancient tale…
