“Brother Yang, what on earth happened?” Long Teng asked curiously.

Yang Meng replied, “‘Fetal Light’ is a person’s primary soul. In traditional Chinese medicine, whether someone is truly dead is determined by whether their fetal light is gone. If it’s lost, their life is over. Long Nanyao lost hers, which is why I said you had seven days or she’d certainly die. But now, Feng Tao has only his fetal light left among his three souls and seven spirits—in other words, from now on, he’s nothing but a living corpse. Long Teng, a word to the wise: don’t get greedy and try making money by arranging ghost marriages for others. If you mess up, Feng Tao’s fate will be yours.”

Long Teng bristled, “Me? Arrange a ghost marriage? Do you think that’s possible?”

Yang Meng shrugged. “With your level of intelligence, I wouldn’t put anything past you. Remember when you got drunk and, just to show off, nearly sold your own sister? Anyone stuck with you as a brother is truly unlucky.”

Long Teng wanted to retort, but after glancing at Long Mingyang, he wisely decided to hold his tongue.

Long Mingyang’s concerns were elsewhere. “Master Yang, when will Yao Yao wake up?” His manner of address had changed; he now called him ‘Master’ without a trace of condescension, for Yang Meng’s supernatural abilities were unfathomable.

Yang Meng shook his head. “She should wake up soon. Dust returns to dust; Zhao Yun’s wish has been fulfilled. In a moment, Long Nanyao’s soul will return. But let me warn you, with a new vegetative patient appearing out of nowhere, explaining this to the doctors is your problem, not mine.”

Hearing this, Long Mingyang and the others breathed a collective sigh of relief. As long as Long Nanyao was safe, all was well.

Long Teng glanced at Feng Tao, still lying on the floor. “What’s there to explain? That’s for the doctors to figure out, not us.”

Yang Meng looked at him with disgust. “Tsk-tsk, the hearts of the rich really are black.”

Long Teng’s face froze, and he gave an awkward laugh. “I’m not wrong, am I? What am I supposed to tell the doctors—that someone took his soul away? No one would believe it!”

Yang Meng spread his hands, making no further comment.

Long Mingyang said, “Master Yang, I understand. We’ll keep everything that happened here today strictly confidential. We’ll also provide Feng Tao’s family with an explanation.”

Yang Meng snapped his fingers. “Long Teng, that’s the difference—your father understands. Alright, I’m leaving now. I still have to check on my friend.”

Long Teng hurriedly grabbed him. “Wait, Brother Yang, at least stay until my sister wakes up. I just want peace of mind… Oh, and one more thing: what do you mean by ‘taking on this karma’? If you hadn’t helped, what would have happened?”

Yang Meng replied, “Taking on this karma means I promised Zhao Yun I’d fulfill her wish—otherwise, how could I retrieve your sister’s soul? Though she’s a bit proud, the girl is innocent. Even if you hadn’t begged me, I would have brought her soul back. As for Feng Tao? Heh, I could have found countless ways to reunite him with Zhao Yun… Long Teng, is your curiosity satisfied now? Can you keep my secret?”

Long Teng nodded furiously. Yang Meng was terrifying—he could casually turn someone into a vegetable?

Long Mingyang laughed. “Master Yang, thank you for broadening my horizons today! I thought I was well-traveled and knowledgeable, but now I see what a true extraordinary man is.”

Yang Meng smiled. “I’m no extraordinary man. I can’t read feng shui or fortunes—I’m not fit for the spotlight. I don’t want to be disturbed because of this, and I trust you’ll all keep my secret, right?”

“Of course!” Who at the scene dared say otherwise? What if they angered him and he turned them into a vegetable too? Yang Meng said it was the work of spirits, but who knew if that was true or not?

Yang Meng walked to the bedside, and like a doctor, lifted Long Nanyao’s eyelid. “Strange, she should have woken up by now. What’s the problem?”

The Long family grew anxious at his words, but before they could ask, Long Nanyao’s voice suddenly burst from the bed: “Get your filthy hands off me!”

The Long family was overjoyed—Long Nanyao was awake! But what happened next stunned everyone. Yang Meng, secretly pleased to see her awake, turned to the family to claim some credit, but before he could speak, Long Nanyao slapped him hard across the face. “You pervert! What were you trying to do to me?”

“Yao Yao!” Long Mingyang, Long Teng, and Duan Bowen all cried out in alarm. Leaving aside Yang Meng’s mysterious powers—just for saving her, she couldn’t hit him!

Yang Meng rubbed his face. It didn’t hurt, but it was certainly embarrassing.

“Well, it seems she’s fine—full of spirit. I’m off! The rest is your mess to clean up!” With that, Yang Meng strode out, leaving the Long family dumbfounded.

Long Nanyao collected herself. “Dad? Brother? Bowen? Why are you all here?”

Long Mingyang pulled himself together, a wry smile on his face. “Long Teng, go after Master Yang. Don’t let this incident sour his feelings toward our family. Bowen, contact the hospital and deal with Feng Tao’s situation. Notify his family if you can reach them.”

Long Nanyao didn’t understand why her father ignored her, but when she saw Feng Tao lying on the ground, she asked anxiously, “What’s wrong with Feng Tao? Why’s he on the floor? Where are we?”

Long Teng and Duan Bowen exchanged glances and left together, shaking their heads, leaving only Long Mingyang in the room.

“Dad? Why did my brother and Bowen leave?” Long Nanyao asked, confused.

Long Mingyang shook his head. “Don’t ask, Yao Yao. You’ve been in the hospital for days. I’m just glad you’re alright.”

“I’ve been here for days? Dad, don’t scare me!” she exclaimed. Seeing the hospital gown she wore, she frowned. “Why don’t I remember anything? And Feng Tao—why’s he on the ground?” She moved to get out of bed and help him up.

Long Mingyang stopped her. “Leave him be! You’re in the hospital because of him! Just now, Master Yang saved you, and you slapped him.”

“Master? What kind of title is that?” Long Nanyao was baffled, but her father’s words struck a chord. “Dad, what are you talking about? How is me being here Feng Tao’s fault? He loves me—he’d never hurt me!”

Long Mingyang sighed. “My foolish daughter, do you really think your meeting was by chance? You were set up.”

He selectively recounted for her what had happened, including how Feng Tao discovered her identity. As for how Yang Meng saved her, he glossed over it with a single sentence—some things, unless witnessed firsthand, are simply unbelievable.

“Dad, then what’s wrong with Feng Tao?” she asked, staring at him in confusion.

Long Mingyang spread his hands. “After he was exposed, he got angry and just lay down and became like this—pretty much like someone faking an accident. Yao Yao, not to criticize, but you really misjudged your boyfriend.”

Long Nanyao was half-convinced, but seeing the sincerity in her father’s eyes, she couldn’t help believing.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Long Teng was frantic. “Brother Yang, could you slow down a bit?”

Yang Meng shot him a look. “What for? So your sister can slap me again? I’ve never been hit by anyone, not even my parents!”

Long Teng blinked. “There’s a first time for everything. My sister is the first woman to slap you… Oh, damn, Brother Yang, I can’t afford that slap—pretend I said nothing!”

Yang Meng glared at him. “I have no time for you! Hm? Nurse, where is the person who was in this room?” He had arrived at Lin Feng’s observation room, only to find it empty. Spotting a young nurse passing by, he hurried to ask her.

The nurse’s expression startled him—it was the look of a lamb facing a hungry wolf.

“Excuse me, are you Mr. Yang Meng?” she asked uncertainly.

Yang Meng was taken aback. “You know me?”

Before he had finished speaking, the nurse suddenly hugged his waist and shouted toward the nurses’ station, “I’ve caught Yang Meng! Hurry, someone come over, don’t let him escape!”

Yang Meng and Long Teng were dumbfounded. What was going on?

After the nurse shouted, all the nearby nurses rushed out, surrounding Yang Meng. One even picked up the phone. “Hello, security? This is internal medicine—get up here, and bring plenty of people!”

Long Teng asked curiously, “Brother Yang, what’s happening?”

Yang Meng was also at a loss. “I have no idea! This didn’t happen when I was here a few days ago. Nurse, my friend is still staying here—has there been a misunderstanding?”

The nurse, still holding onto him, shook her head. “Absolutely no misunderstanding! We’ve been looking for you for a long time!”

“Looking for me? Let go, I’m not running. For the first time in my life, I’m surrounded by this many women, and it’s for this? What’s going on with your hospital? Where’s your department head—what’s his name again? Oh, I remember! Di Shouye—is he here? Does he know you’re treating me like this?”

An older nurse replied, “Director Di ordered us to do this! He said if we saw you, we must keep you here no matter what! He’ll be here soon!”

Yang Meng was furious. “Damn it, what did I do to deserve being detained? Who do you think you are, the police? If Di Shouye doesn’t give me a reasonable explanation, I swear I’ll trash your hospital!”
