Chapter 36: Fortune Beckons
Luo Xia looked at Situ Tengyi and saw a slight curve at his lips. "Luo Luo, this treasury is yours anyway, so there's no need to rush things."
Luo Xia nodded. "Shadowless, let's do as you say."
The little cat visibly breathed a sigh of relief! This vault held all the wealth it had accumulated over its lifetime—an unimaginable fortune. It was terrified Situ Tengyi might get greedy and kill both it and Luo Xia; if that happened, it would be doomed.
"Little cat, since you're so rich, why don't I call you Fortune?" Luo Xia asked with a beaming smile.
The little cat shook its head. "No way, I have a name. My name is—"
Luo Xia interrupted, "Enough. Since you've acknowledged me as your master, I have the right to name you."
"Not fair," the little cat nearly burst into tears.
"Fortune it is," Luo Xia declared, leaving no room for negotiation.
Back at the Luo Manor, she had been penniless. Now, with this little cat, she could finally call herself a little heiress.
"Yes, that's a good name. From now on, Fortune is responsible for making money for Luo Luo," Situ Tengyi said, gazing at Luo Xia with deep affection, though when his eyes flicked to the little cat, they carried an unmistakable threat.
The little cat instantly felt an overwhelming pressure from a powerful presence! He was using that trick again!
Oh well, Fortune it is. The name isn’t terrible.
"Fortune," Luo Xia called out warmly.
Fortune wore a glum expression and turned its head away.
"Fortune, when we reach the Magic Beast Forest, I'll grill fish for you."
"Who wants your fish?" Fortune was on the verge of despair! How could its master still have the mood to tease it?
"You said so yourself," Luo Xia replied slyly. When she left the Luo Manor, she’d packed plenty of seasonings just for the chance to picnic in the wild.
"Let's go," Situ Tengyi said, taking Luo Xia’s hand.
Luo Xia, caught up in her happiness, didn't even notice as she let him lead her out of the space hand-in-hand.
Fortune trailed gloomily behind them. Still, they hadn’t tried to open its treasury, so that was a relief. But these two were cunning and sly—who knew when they might suddenly force it to open the vault again?
Oh, poor thing!
The carriage rolled on. Half a day had passed already, and at this pace, according to Shadow, they would reach the Magic Beast Forest before nightfall.
"Tired?" Situ Tengyi asked.
Luo Xia shook her head. "I'm not that delicate."
"I’ve heard that the third young lady of the Luo family was a frail beauty, too weak to withstand the wind. Clearly, rumors can’t be trusted," Situ Tengyi said, smiling.
"Were you secretly in love with me before?" Luo Xia asked with a laugh.
"Whatever makes you think that?"
"Why else would you have barged into the Luo Manor? Let me guess—though the third young lady was called useless, she was said to be the reincarnation of a phoenix, the future empress. So… you want to be emperor, don't you?"
"Pfft—" Situ Tengyi nearly spat blood on the spot!
This girl’s imagination was truly extraordinary.
Still, her guess wasn’t far off. Though coming to the Luo Manor hadn’t been his choice—his master had forced him.
"Am I wrong?" Luo Xia tilted her head, a hint of mockery curving her lips. This man had clung to her, tried to wrest her away from the Evil King—surely not for her charms, but for the rumors!
He was clever and capable, not so easily deceived as the emperor or crown prince. He could tell at a glance which phoenix was real and which was false.
For some reason, a faint sadness welled in her heart.
"Luo Luo, are you jealous?" Situ Tengyi asked, his smile as gentle as the spring breeze in March.
