Chapter 114: A God-like Hero
"Kyle, you..." General Chester’s face was etched with horror. He looked at Senator Ivan, who was undeniably dead, his lips trembling as he sighed, unable to find the words.
He was far from the only one stunned by Kyle’s shocking actions. The senators and military officers near the dais, along with the media and the public watching from below, stood with their mouths agape in unison. It was too bloody and violent, and the victim was a senator, no less!
"Your tactics don't work on me," Kyle whispered coldly. He shifted his gaze from Ivan’s corpse to the two other senators who had collapsed in terror at his feet.
"Save me! General, save me!"
"He’s lost his mind! Where are the guards? Stop him!"
The two senators were trembling with fear, their dignified facade completely shattered as they scrambled desperately across the platform, trying to escape Kyle’s reach. Kyle, his expression indifferent, continued to walk slowly toward them.
"Kyle, stand down! Those are senators. If you do this, you will disrupt the order of the nation," General Chester urged, raising his voice.
"Is that so?" Kyle smiled, his voice cold. "If the upper echelons are infiltrated and subverted by Hydra without their own knowledge, then I don’t mind forcing a correction and replacing the top hierarchy with fresh blood."
"Hydra?" General Chester’s expression changed drastically. He stared straight at Kyle and asked, taking a deep breath, "Do you have proof?"
"If I say they are, they are. Why would I need proof?" As Kyle spoke, he reached the second Hydra-infiltrated senator. He lifted his left foot slightly and kicked, sending the man flying like a ball; he tumbled through the air before slamming into the crater in the wall where Ivan had previously been thrown.
"You are completely lawless. Even if he is a member of Hydra, he should be subject to due process," General Chester frowned deeply.
The new President also spoke up, his voice urgent and stern: "Major General Kyle, although you are a war hero, everything must be investigated and verified by the relevant departments. You cannot execute people of senatorial rank based solely on suspicion!"
"I only do what I believe is right. My conscience is clear." Having said this, Kyle ignored their warnings and pleas, walking toward the final Hydra spy cowering on the ground.
"Kyle!" General Chester gritted his teeth. Watching the terrified senators, he made a split-second decision and raised his arm. With a clatter, dozens of armed soldiers surrounding the dais leveled their weapons at Kyle.
This scene sparked another chorus of gasps from the crowd in the plaza.
Kyle paused, scanned the armed soldiers, and asked bluntly, "Are you, too, going to be my enemy?"
The soldiers’ bodies trembled slightly, and they were on the verge of lowering their weapons. Seeing this, General Chester barked angrily, "What are you doing? You are elite soldiers tasked with upholding the nation's laws!"
He was not afraid of Kyle’s individual combat prowess; he was afraid that Kyle’s prestige and influence allowed him to ignore regulations and do exactly as he pleased. This was the primary reason the American leadership had always been wary of him.
The soldiers hesitated, beginning to raise their weapons again, but the next moment, the crowd in the plaza below spoke in unison: "Put down your weapons!"
"Lower your weapons! What do you think you’re doing?!"
"Major General Kyle must have his reasons. Those senators were definitely spies!"
"How can you point your guns at a war hero who brought us peace?!"
The public didn't know the full situation, but they understood one thing clearly: Hero Kyle was definitely in the right! Anyone who opposed Kyle was undoubtedly a terrorist spy or a villain.
Howard, still hovering in a helicopter nearby, laughed as he heard the thousands of voices defending Kyle. "Kyle, this is what it truly means to 'stand shoulder to shoulder with the gods'!"
Having reached the pinnacle of a superhero, and with the world returning to peace after the battle in Japan, the image of Kyle in the public’s heart had long since forged a golden aura of justice that rivaled the divine. Under the influence of the fervent crowd, the soldiers exchanged glances and lowered their rifles.
Under everyone’s gaze, Kyle delivered another simple kick, sending the final Hydra spy into the wall. The structure finally collapsed, partially burying the three corpses.
General Chester said no more. With a weary, aged look, he turned slowly and bowed his head, leaving the dais.
The new President fell silent for a moment before his face darkened. He announced with authority: "Major General Kyle has eliminated three spies who threatened national security! Moving forward, I will apply to the World Security Council to form a department dedicated to hunting down and eliminating the remnants of Hydra hidden across the globe! Major General Kyle will oversee its implementation!"
This was clearly a popular move, and the crowd in the plaza cheered for the President’s decision.
*He reacts quickly. A true politician,* Kyle thought with approval.
He walked beside the President and addressed the crowd: "Since the war is over, there is no longer a need for national symbols of conquest and power. Here, I formally resign from my position as Major General."
Without waiting for the public or the media to react, Kyle gave the new President a meaningful look and whispered, "As for what you mentioned, leave it to Nick Fury—he is my representative."
"Huh?" Fury, still standing on the dais, exclaimed. Just as he was about to step forward to voice his opinion, Kyle leaped into the air, landing directly at the cabin door of the helicopter.
The helicopter ascended in coordination, carrying Kyle toward the skies of New York.
Amidst the roar of the crowd, Fury watched the helicopter disappear, offering a bitter smile. "Why does it feel like you’ve dumped another problem on me?"
When Kyle was a Major, he managed the Howling Commandos for him. When Kyle was a Major General, he managed a fleet of battleships for him. Now that Kyle had resigned his commission, he had hoped for a break, but it seemed there was a new department yet to be formed.
"Next time, I’m definitely demanding a raise!" Fury gritted his teeth.
Inside the helicopter leaving Washington, Howard sat in the pilot's seat, while Kyle and a black-haired girl in a hood sat in the back.
"It’s still early. Want to go back to Stark Tower for a drink?" Howard suggested in high spirits.
"Just take me to Logan’s location. Next time, bring Fury along; there’s a child here," Kyle said, gesturing to Yu Tong sitting beside him.
"How did you manage to drag her along? You wouldn't tell me when I asked earlier," Howard asked, looking curiously at the cute and quiet girl.
"You old rogue, anything that comes out of your mouth sounds like trouble," Kyle shrugged, patting Yu Tong’s head. His expression turned serious. "This child is like Logan; she has special mutant abilities."
At the bottom of the well in Tokyo, he could only shield her from the majority of the nuclear blast's aftermath, but some of the radiation and shockwaves had still reached Yu Tong. At that moment, the hidden telepathic power she had inadvertently unleashed was enough to shock even Kyle.
