Moon Princess
"Why? Why would she want to kill me without even meeting me? Is your mother insane?" Chen Yage thought to herself, her lips twitching, but before she could voice her doubts, Dujuan continued, "If you want to stay alive, don’t ask why. Just stay here quietly. I’m going out now."
With that, Dujuan left. Chen Yage crouched behind the clothes rack, watching Dujuan open and close the door, sighing inwardly at how capricious women could be. One moment gentle and innocent, the next fierce and cruel! The ancients were indeed prescient—women and petty men are hard to deal with! Better to offend a gentleman than a woman or a villain!
But where exactly was this place? Where are you, Brother Bai? Are you still waiting for me in the cave, or have you entered the water too?
She remembered how, when she fell into the dark hole, Li Bai had jumped in after her without hesitation. So if she had plunged into the pool, surely Li Bai wouldn’t just stand by the water’s edge. Brother Bai, you must be alright! You must be safe! If Dujuan could rescue her, then surely fortune would favor Brother Bai as well. Brother Bai, are you in Peach Blossom Spring? No, I must go find him. The thought that Li Bai might be in danger made Chen Yage suddenly anxious, and she felt guilty for having forgotten him while she ate so carelessly just moments ago.
As Chen Yage was about to stand up, the door swung open. Thinking it was Dujuan, she was about to speak, but a middle-aged woman’s voice called out, “I’ll go change my clothes first. You get ready too, and come with me to see the young master!”
Chen Yage quickly retreated, crouching under the clothes rack as footsteps approached, her heart pounding wildly.
Standing before her was a woman in her forties, strikingly alluring, with eyebrows like willow leaves and eyes that could ensnare souls. Her skin was pale, nearly as fair as Dujuan’s, and her luscious lips on that enchanting face made her all the more seductive.
How remarkable—truly a beauty who has aged gracefully! Chen Yage felt a pang of jealousy and admiration. Since arriving in the Tang Dynasty, she hadn’t looked into a mirror, and she wondered what she looked like now. Not seeking to be a peerless beauty, she hoped at least to possess a striking charm!
Chen Yage was the type who could amuse herself anywhere, anytime.
Just then, the beauty loosened her belt, and her flawless figure was revealed. Chen Yage’s eyes widened in astonishment; she hadn’t expected this mature beauty to have such a graceful body.
“Who’s there?” the beauty snapped. Chen Yage held her breath, but it was no use—she couldn’t escape the woman’s wrath. A hand clamped tightly around her neck, making it hard to breathe. She struggled desperately, hitting the woman’s hand, but it was useless.
“How dare you spy on me changing clothes! Even if you’re a woman, I’ll kill you all the same!” the beauty growled, her fierce words at odds with her seductive appearance.
The prettier the woman, the more ruthless she becomes!
Unable to save herself, Chen Yage cast a pleading glance at Dujuan. Dujuan stood anxiously nearby, clearly terrified of the beauty. Chen Yage grew even more desperate watching Dujuan’s hesitant movements.
“Heavens, do you really want me to die at the hands of this mature beauty? They say to die under the peony blossom is a romantic fate, but this isn’t my style!” Chen Yage struggled to pry the woman’s hand away.
“Mother, please don’t kill her!” After much hesitation, Dujuan finally spoke, grabbing her mother’s hand tightly. The beauty was Dujuan’s mother, Yueji.
“You know her?” Yueji looked at Dujuan, her stern gaze making Dujuan shiver.
Dujuan lowered her head and whispered, “Yes.” Then she looked up again and pleaded, “Mother, please don’t kill her!”
Yueji released Chen Yage, who quickly moved aside, gulping fresh air. She rubbed her sore neck, sneaking a glance at Yueji.
Yueji glared at Chen Yage, who knew better than to provoke her and stood quietly to the side.
“Who is she?” Yueji’s tone brooked no lies. Dujuan answered honestly, “She’s the one I saved from the riverbank.”
Smack! Yueji slapped Dujuan’s face, leaving a red mark.
This was outrageous. Chen Yage rushed in front of Yueji, grabbing her hand before another slap could land, and shouted angrily, “She’s your daughter—how can you hit her so casually?”
Yueji shook off Chen Yage’s hand, straightened her sleeve, and sneered, “She’s my daughter. I’ll hit her if I want. Are you going to stop me?”
“Today, I will stop you!” Chen Yage rolled up her sleeves, ready for a fight, but Dujuan quickly intervened, signaling her to hold back.
At that moment, Shuiniu walked in from outside. He approached Yueji, lowered his head, and said quietly, “Mother, she’s the one I saved. If you must punish someone, punish me. It has nothing to do with Dujuan.”
Yueji’s expression softened considerably. She gently stroked Shuiniu’s face, and Chen Yage felt goosebumps all over. Though they were mother and son, something about their interaction seemed odd, but she couldn’t quite pinpoint what.
