Chapter Fifty-Four: Xue Xi Achieves His Goal
Returning home, Xue Xi was so delighted that she treated Chen Hongxu as if he were invisible, heading straight to the kitchen to prepare dinner. It must be said, ever since Xue Xi mastered the art of cooking normal dishes, Chen Hongxu hadn’t set foot in the kitchen again.
In her mind, a woman who can cook is a good woman. Though she was still some distance from completely winning over Chen Hongxu’s appetite, practice makes perfect, and Xue Xi seemed to have a knack for everything except martial arts, which she struggled with. Anything else, she picked up quickly.
After dinner, the two sat on the sofa, wide-eyed and staring at each other. Chen Hongxu wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words, while Xue Xi remained stubbornly silent, plotting her own little schemes.
The clock’s hands spun rapidly. As midnight crept in, the occasional meow echoed from the neighborhood below. Chen Hongxu glanced at the wall clock, its hour and minute hands both pointing at twelve, and said earnestly, “You always claim sleep deprivation is a woman’s greatest enemy, so why are you staying up with me tonight?”
Xue Xi turned her head away, refusing to speak, determined to remain silent.
The living room fell into a brief silence, punctuated only by Bing Ling’s occasional silly laughter at the muted television. The bed had been delivered that afternoon; if Chen Hongxu hadn’t figured out Xue Xi’s intentions by now, he had truly missed the point.
With a resigned sigh, Chen Hongxu slowly stood up, ready to resort to desperate measures. Xue Xi pouted and huddled on the sofa, tears glistening in her eyes, watching Chen Hongxu with wary anticipation.
Chen Hongxu approached Xue Xi, raising his hand as if to knock her out, but Xue Xi seemed to anticipate his move. She sprang up, launching herself at him like a tiger pouncing on its prey.
“You’ve trained for this?” Chen Hongxu wondered, staring at the girl clinging to his neck, her legs wrapped around his waist. He spoke seriously, “Don’t make a fuss. I’ve already told you I have my reasons. Give me some time to sort things out, and then—”
“Cut the nonsense!” Xue Xi, eyes red with frustration, raised her hands and slapped Chen Hongxu’s shoulders hard. “It’s just some so-called ominous curse. I don’t care. Alive, you’re mine. Dead, I’ll be your ghost. And besides, aren’t you the evil one here? I’m only asking to sleep beside you, not for anything more. You’re such a villain…”
Chen Hongxu hastily wrapped his arms around Xue Xi’s slender waist, afraid she’d fall in her agitation. To be honest, he truly cared for her, intending to protect her for a lifetime. Yet that looming curse persisted, growing heavier as his strength increased, confirming that Bing Ling’s warnings were anything but nonsense.
But Xue Xi’s resolve was ironclad, utterly unshakable.
He didn’t have time to blame Bing Ling for his loose tongue and sharing everything with Xue Xi. After a moment of silence, Chen Hongxu said seriously, “If we keep on like this, we’ll be happy for a while. But someday, I’ll die, and you’ll find someone else. He won’t know your past, but he’ll love you deeply.”
Xue Xi, eyes brimming with tears, choked out, “Is that what you think?”
Chen Hongxu nodded. Xue Xi smiled, then suddenly leaned in and bit his neck fiercely.
Chen Hongxu dared not release a hint of energy, afraid he’d break Xue Xi’s teeth.
After a while, Xue Xi lifted her head, smacked Chen Hongxu a few more times, and cried, “I’ll bite you to death, you scoundrel! Always saying outrageous things. I’m yours, always yours. There’ll never be some imaginary ‘him.’ I’m a woman; I don’t need some grand mission to continue the family line. If you die, I’ll go with you.”
Her delicate fists swung aimlessly, occasionally striking the spot she’d just bitten. It hurt, but felt oddly comforting.
Chen Hongxu seemed to have figured something out. He smiled, turning to look at Bing Ling, who pretended to watch TV but was completely absorbed in the melodrama unfolding before him. “Bing Ling, don’t sneak in tonight. Sleep on the sofa, or take Xue Xi’s room.”
Xue Xi hummed, resting her head against Chen Hongxu’s, rubbing affectionately, and winked at the disgruntled Bing Ling.
Bing Ling looked melancholy, muttering, “Got a wife, forgot your mother. The world’s changed!”
Chen Hongxu carried Xue Xi to the bedroom. Truth be told, Xue Xi was remarkably handy; for a rich young lady, she’d likely never made a bed or folded sheets. Yet everything on the new bed in Chen Hongxu’s room had been meticulously arranged by her, neat and orderly.
He nudged the door closed with his foot, gently laid Xue Xi on the bed, and gazed at her blushing face, amused and pained, tenderly moved.
It seemed that since she’d been with him, even her innate pride had been relinquished. She accommodated everything for him, considered everything on his behalf. Her old habits, catchphrases, even the mature style she’d shown when they first met, had vanished, never to return.
All for him.
Chen Hongxu slowly bent down and kissed her.
The night was both long and short. In the end, nothing happened between Chen Hongxu and Xue Xi. He watched the girl, exhausted but still trying to match his endurance, entangled around him like an octopus, feeling deeply satisfied and happy.
He thought of her earlier complaint about her habit of sleeping naked, the look of grievance when he stopped her, and silently smiled. His hand tightened around Xue Xi’s shoulder, fearful of losing her, afraid she’d slip away.
At four in the morning, the sky still dim, a shrill alarm rang out. Chen Hongxu instinctively reached to silence it, then remembered he’d turned it off the night before. Where was the sound coming from?
Xue Xi, half-awake, fumbled in her pants pocket for her phone, glanced at it, then slowly climbed out of bed, sleepwalking toward the door.
“Hey?” Chen Hongxu jumped up, rushed to Xue Xi, and waved his hand before her, a little anxious.
Xue Xi seemed grumpy from waking, grunted, brushed off his hand, and stared blankly at him. “What are you doing?”
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Are you alright?” Chen Hongxu reached out to touch her forehead.
She pushed his hand away, yawned, and said, “Bing Ling said you have to train at four in the morning. I set an alarm so I could go back to my room and not disturb you.”
“Huh?” Chen Hongxu looked at Xue Xi and, for the first time, lied. “Four? What four? I always sleep till six.”
Xue Xi didn’t believe him, but finally succumbed to his plea, “Stay with me.”
Meanwhile, at New World RTV, Liu Yixian gripped his dagger tightly, stared at the pleading man opposite him, and moved swiftly...
